The Persistent Walker

The Persistent Walker

Lisa Cohen

I am a persistent person
I have gone from using a walker or cane to walking without aids many times
Each time I think I won’t be able to do it
But people remind me that I have done it before
Then my persistence pays off
First comes the decision to get rid of the walker
That is a scary one

But I temporarily set the walker aside and struggle to put my BalanceWear
vest on
And I start with walking in my building then walking half a block then one
block then two blocks then three blocks then four blocks and soon it is a
mile
Each extra block is a milestone
I am a persistent person

I walk step by step
My legs might hurt but I keep going
Step by step
My legs tighten but I keep going
Step by step
My back might hurt but I keep going
Step by step
I rest whenever I need to
I take photos when I am inspired
I am a persistent person

Now I try to walk every day
No matter the weather
Some days it’s a short walk others a long walk
But I am walking on my own
and it makes me feel better
I am a persistent person.
