    nystagmus and referral

Well, I went to see my PCP today. I've been having trouble all weekend with spasms and double vision and bladder issues. I called in to my neurologist (who is not very interested in me) and they wouldn't have been able to get me in until March.

So I went to my PCP, and she gave me some muscle relaxers for the spasms. She also said I had nystagmus, my eyes were bouncing around trying to follow her finger. She said that may be why I'm having double vision. She is concerned about my muscles and ordered some blood work to make sure my electrolytes are all in order. (I do take a multivitamin and magnesium, calcium, and vit D)

So, she is referring me to the University of Michigan. She doesn't know if it's ms or not, and she said she will help me with my symptoms in the meantime until they figure out what is going on with me. So hopefully it won't take too long to get in and they can figure this all out.

It seems like nystagmus can be caused by MS, has anyone had it before? I looked up nystagmus, spasticity and trigeminal neuralgia (my 3 biggest symptoms right now) and of course all that comes up is MS. I know it could be something else, but it just seems like its pointing to ms more and more.

I have nystagmus, TN bilaterally, and spasticity. I am glad they are checking your vitamin levels. Sometimes too much Calcium can cause Nystagmus and spasticity. But TN, no. I am happy you are getting a referral. You should also ask for a referral to a neuro-opthalmologist about your nystagmus. In the meantime. Especially if that is a new thing. Your nystagmus may be responsible for your dizziness and double vision, but there is something behind that. A nerve palsy, INO, something that needs to be diagnosed and will speed along your MS diagnosis. A neuro-optho can do that. These provide clues to lesions in your brain in very specific areas of the brainstem.

Be sure to ask for an evaluation by one, or at least an ophthalmologist

Good luck going forward, and let us know how it goes.

Hi & WELCOME wendya432 to MSworld

I see Dr Segal, a MS specialist at UofM, but I see him in the MS clinic at the AAVA. I like him so far, 3 yrs now and he is nice & does listen better than most.

I had testing done years ago and my eye follow sometimes messes up. At a P/T eval my son and the therapist were LOL that my eyes in one direction kept moving past the target in one direction...My son who drove me said I looked like a CARTOON!
