Not only do I want to help research but I also wanted to limit expenses for my family. Most colleges that take cadavers for science and/or for teaching practices require that a body be sent to a funeral home and then sent to the school, at the family's expense. Cremation for remains and return is an additional expense.
In Illinois, I found Biological Resource Center of Illinois in Rosemont. They will pick up the body, take what they need (Brain & Spinal Cord most likely) cremate and either return the remains to family or they have a lovely "Memorial Garden" and they have a tribute every year to celebrate those that have chosen science.
All at no expense for my family. I told my loved ones it was either this or "Hefty, hefty hefty"
