    Milk intolerance

Ok, this one is not about my intolerance but my son. He is 11.
When he was a baby he had milk allergy until he was 2.5. I breast fed him until 12 months then switched to formula, that had to be hypoallergenic, because he developed rashes, more like spots, nnot hives and diarrhea. I reintroduced cow's milk into his diet and had no issues for a long time. I recently noticed he had terrible gas, he was passing gas loudly on the couch watching tv, eating breakfast, reading, you name it. I figured that it had to do something with his diet and my first thought was to rule out milk. He used to eat his cereal with milk or have a glass of hot chocolate and dart to the bathroom. So I cut out the milk, and now he barely has gas. Is there any foolproof method to diagnose dairy allergies that is somewhat child friendly? He is missing out on some of his favorite foods without the proper diagnosis. He is taking Vitamin D3 with Calcium for his growing bones and I try to feed him a balanced diet with a lots of veggies.

Wish I could help but I am working with my 14 year old daughter on stomach issues. Doctor put her on prilosec for possible ulser and also thinks she has either a lactose intolerance or wheat. So for the next two weeks we are cutting out all dairy and if not better will try no wheat for the following 2 weeks. Best of luck with your son, allergies can be so hard to figure out.

It sounds like what is called “lactose intolerance” and a lot of the time people grow out of it.
In the mean time switch to a lactose free milk, cheese, ice cream, and other foods.
Web search “lactose intolerance” to find out more then what I could tell you.

One recommendation I have is do switch to rice milk and almond milk, for both of you.
Both are less inflammatory and that is good for MS.
Silk’s Dark Chocolate Almond Milk is something I think you will both enjoy, a lot! I know I do.

I hope this helps him and he starts feeling better.

NutritionData.com can guild you do what food to avoid and enjoy, for both lactose and inflammation.
The lactose info is a little hard to find, you need to expand the Carbohydrates info to see it.

P.S. rice and Almond milks can be found in the refrigerated section of the grocery store in with the milks.

Thanks for the info, Sir-Vor. I am vegetarian and do not consume dairy products at all. I eat eggs sometimes just to get my vitamin B levels back up. I have a soymilk maker at home and make all different kind of vegetarian milks such as cashew, millet, almond, rice, whatever I fancy. Unfortunately I couldnt yet sell the idea to my son.
It is strange that he actually hates milk and yoghurt, only had them because we were pushing it for his growth

Allergy testing by an allergy specialist. It is a skin prick test but it's not that bad, both of my children had it done at a young age.

My son had milk allergies (milk protein). His allergies have changed over the years, which is common and he no longer has a problem with milk proteins (he's 21 now).

Both of my children drank Soy Dream for many years and liked it.

My daughter is lactose intolerant, and I buy a fast acting lactase enzyme supplement in the grocery store for her. Kroger carries a generic. She takes a tablet whenever she want to have anything dairy, usually needs it for cheese.

I also buy a vegitarian digestive enzyme supplement, Basic brand that seems to help.

She was never tested, but was under the care of a doctor for an eating disorder when we discussed this. It was just generally said that if she reacted to dairy, then she had the problem. Her dietician had suggested soy milk and soy yogurts, which she uses regularly.

Please cut out the gluten completely! for a minimum 30 days. If this is not solved she will be headed ..not good.
Your MD even suggested a wheat intolerance...pretty forward thinking....
