    Exercise Check-In for 08/31/17

Seven people checked in this week.

    GOALS REACHED:
We had another good week; we all made our goals!

    GOALS MISSED:
None of us didn't make any goals.

    OTHER:
I hope that Abby will join us this week.

    Exercise Tip:
I don't always feel motivated to look for exercise tips. Feel free to add one, if you wish. Pats on the back if you changed your goal to something that you decided is more appropriate for you. An appropriate goal can motivate you to keep trying.

    For new Exercisers:
Feel free to join us. You set your own goals. You can keep the same goals week-to-week, or modify them. You decide if you accomplished them. Check in once a week to let us know how you did last week, and to set goals for the following week.

    Made 1 goal

    Goal was:
    One or both:
    1. Walk 3,000 steps or more 3 or more times per week, or average 2200 steps per day.
    2. Exercise 2 times this week. Could be an exercise class or WiiFit or something else.

Exercised 2x. Did not walk enough steps; I was way lower than usual.

    Steps plus exercise:
    Th- 1713

    F - 1413
    S - 1056
    S - 2253
    Mon - 1403
Tue - 2016; went to physical therapy
W - 1068; did PT exercises at home
Total: 10,922 steps. Average: 1560 steps per day

My sprained toe is still healing.

Per my request, my local doctor referred me to physical therapy. My MS Specialist, my husband, and myself have all noticed declines in various areas.

My initial appointment was on Tuesday. The physical therapist began with an evaluation or assessment of my abilities and my needs (posture, gait, range of motion, strength, mobility, etc). She had me do some exercises there and she printed out a series of six exercises that she instructed me to do at home daily.

After the appointment and checking on my insurance coverage, they recommended that I come back twice per week for six weeks, for a total of 12 appointments. Although insurance coverage helps, there is a $50 copay per visit, for a total out-of-pocket charge of $600 for me. I decided to go ahead and do it -- that my mobility is worth it. They gave me a 10% discount because I paid it upfront at the first visit.

My second visit is scheduled for today. Most weeks, I'll go Mondays and Wednesdays.

I'm going to change my goals for the next six weeks and then I'll re-evaluate.
    1. Continue to record my steps. I won't set a goal regarding how many I wish to walk every day for now.
    2. Do my PT exercises at least 6 times out of 7 days. Attending PT appointment will count; I might, or might not, also do PT exercises on appointment days.

So glad you started PT Faith!

I made my goal from last week.

Gardening and landscape work - 3x/week
Yoga class and practice at home
Arm exercises with barbells - 3x/week - 12 reps each

Bonus - more cleaning house after company - mopped my hardwood floors which was interesting. I sat on my walker with brakes on while I mopped. It was hard work.

Same goal and bonus for next week.
Have a good week ahead everyone!

I made my goal of riding bike for 30mins. 3 times a wk. I also did some extra walking.

Mamabug so glad you started PT and also had a great wk.

Seasha, Good job and good for you, mopping floors sitting on walker.

I hope everyone had a great wk.

Made all my goals again 100%,

Even though I made all my goals I feel less than satisfied. If truth be known they have been increasingly more difficult because of generalized weakening due to MS. I feel considerable weakness following leg exercises. I will keep on as best I can. I am to see my neuro in a month or two and see what he says.

Mamabug, good luck with PT. I know it has helped me greatly and trust it will you too. Just keep in mind the operative word is consistency. Let us know how it goes.

          Best wishes to all. Karen

            Hi everyone

Made goal of walk/stand/activity (up on feet) with rollator for 30 consecutive min, 4X a day, everyday - plus daily stretches.

Mamabug good luck with physical therapy!

Seasha, I used to do my floors like that, but then it became too exhausting. After cleaning an area of floor - get up, release brakes, move walker to the next spot and repeat over and over! Now my sister completes the sweeping and mopping in a fraction of the time it used to take me.

Reg53 and ShrinkKaren - you made goals too - nice effort!

            Keep on persevering everyone!

Tell me about it Don't think I'll try that again. My friend usually does this, but couldn't help out this time and I couldn't wait as it was filthy!

              Good work everyone!

                GOAL:
                1. Walk 3,000 steps or more 3 or more times per week OR average at least 2200 steps per day.
                2. Perform my husbands PT exercises 2x week OR ride the exercise bike for 5 mins a week (BONUS - Two 5 minute sessions).

I walked over 3000 steps / day for 5 of the last 7 days. I averaged 2487 steps / day. So I met one gaol 100%.
I performed no exercises this week - other than the dayly 'have to do's' I have spent most of my time in bed sleeping. And scratching.

Finally drug myself to PCP today to find out what was wrong and get it fixed, but my loving husband made so much noise about how much stress I am under that the doctor pretty much disregarded anything that I said. And of course the more that I denied being stressed the more it sounded as if I were ! So I walked out with a clean bill of health .

I WAS stressed last October when he spent 2 weeks in ICU from a brain hemerage (complete with seizures) and I was stressed from April 30th to May 4th when he was again in ICU after a 12 hour brain surgery. Yeah May and June were kinda rough with taking him to dr appointments and OT/PT up to 5 times each week, but that has slacked off since July ( 1 appointment) and this month he only had 3 appointments and for September he only has 4 appointments scheduled. But now is a cake-walk .

Since there is nothing wrong with me I suppose that I can thank my dh for informing my PCP that I am just the hypochondriack from hell with MAJOR stress problems. That being said I will continue with the same goals for next week and see if I can get my lazy rear into gear and do something.

Great to see everyone else has made their goals . Keep up the good work!

                  Hi msgijo

Maybe your body just needed some extra rest, for no particular reason (except for having MS, caregiving, doing regular chores, etc.)

                  With MS, fatigue just happens.

                  Hope you feel better soon!

                    Thanks KoKo .

I know all that. but what really got me mad is that in addition to MS in my charts now I also have stress. It is hard enough to get most doctors to look for anything else when they just saw MS. but now it will be impossible to find somebody that will get past BOTH of those to actually realize that people with MS (and yeah even stress) can and do have other more normal things wrong sometimes.

I was very frustrated when I posted before. I had fought this for about 3 weeks, saw the doctor twice and both times got blown off. While it probably is/was "just MS" (hate that phrase) it would have been nice to have been taken serious enough to at least look for other causes.

Ah, I get what you were saying now (sorry I can be slow to understand).

Not being taken seriously by the doctor (or anyone for that matter) and having stuff blown off as simply 'just stress' or 'just MS' would be extremely frustrating.

Hopefully you will be truly listened to and heard in the future, by your doctor and DH too.
