I have disability pension from my last job

I have disability pension from my last job. It was a city job. Even though I receive the disability city pension. Shouldn't I still be eligible for SSDI?

Usually pension benefits do not prevent disabled individuals from receiving benefits from SSA for SSDI benefits, assuming the individual meets SSA/SSDI requirements.

I agree. Sometimes, being approved for SSDI may reduce your other disability benefits.

Interplay of government benefits and Social Security benefits

Hello, tinytimsmom. Some government entities opt out of the disability insurance program and their employees do not even pay into the disability program (FICA taxes). And yes, there may be some interplay between Social Security and city or state benefits. Be sure to check with SSA and your city government on how your benefits may be affected.

Here is an FAQ from SSA regarding government opt outs: http://www.ssa.gov/slge/faqs.htm#a0=12.

And if you really are interested in the topic, here is even more info - http://www.ssa.gov/section218trainin...course_4.htm#5.

And here is an article from the Chicago Tribune, which at least addresses this issue: http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2...tributions-act.

        Happy reading.
