    Burning Tongue/Burning Tongue Syndrome?

    Good Morning All~

I just nicely recovered from 2 weeks of MS Hug~and am waiting for repeat Thoracic MRI. But have a very new & weird symptom...burning tongue & mouth...very weird!
Would really help if anyone else has experienced this.
as well I'm not sure this even is related to MS or a total separate issue, seems that it could go in the pile of parathesis (sp?) symptoms I have.

    thanx Candice

When I seen your thread I was sitting here with my tongue hanging out because it has been burning pretty bad lately. I haven't found anything that helps me with burning pain.

I have had this off and on for sometime and have always assumed it was an ms sx.
I keep forgetting to tell my neuro about it, so this time I am going to write it down and discuss it with him next month.

I hope you find some relief soon. Please keep us posted if you find a med that helps.
    God Bless Us All

Although people with MS can experience a burning sensation in the mouth, burning mouth syndrome is usually a separate condition. If the sensation is on one side of the mouth, it could be MS. But since symmetry is not a common onset in MS, any sensation that occurs on both sides of the tongue or mouth is more likely caused by something else. I've been lucky not to ever have had it. I hope you get some relief soon.

Jreagan is right. BMS and MS caused burning tongue are two different conditions They now believe BMS might be nerve related, but not specifically MS related.

I have a burning, tingling tongue but only on the left side. It's as if I drew a line down the middle of my tongue...half hurts half does not.

Ive had the symptom for many years, but if you use the search bar on this site and search the word "tongue", you'll find lots of similar threads about tongue symptoms.

I have a lesion in the right place to be causing my tongue issues, as well as other left sided facial problems and atrophy.

Good news for most people with MS induced rongue issues, this seems to be a transient symptom. As far as medication, Yale studies for BMS found that low doses of Klonopin seem to help with the pain. that's what I was prescribed long ago. I'm still on the same dose and although it doesn't completely eliminate the burning, it helps to tamp it down and make it more like background noise. It's there if I think about it but for the most part it's in the background.

I hope you find relief or the symptom quickly passes.

Thanks jreagan for the infor. My tongue burns all the way across the frt. I don't notice it in the mornings but early afternoon it gets worst. If it is not ms maybe there is hope in treating it.

I've had a burning tongue for years; long before dx. Mine is around the outside part of my tongue and I have had two MS specialists tell me it IS MS related.

              Burning mouth syndrome

I too suffer with BMS. It started 2years ago. My physician put me on oral meds to treat thrush. Didn't work, I knew it wasn't thrush, but did treatment anyway. The mouth symptoms come and goes at random. My mouth burns, roof of mouth swells.
I have also just started with burning in my leg muscles too. With tight feeling feet.
I havent been on a treatment for a few years so it's not the meds.

I too have all what you're experiencing along with my lips. I thought maybe it could be an allergic reaction to my lipstick......NOT! The outer part of my ear burns and hurts sometimes. Then the symptoms disappear. Too much weirdness with this disease.

                Feel better...........

                  Burning Tongue

Thankyou all for your input! I remain with this symptom but not everyday,so bearing with it.
Thanks for the reminder that not every issue we face is not always related to MS.And the recognition that we are all different and can experience the same symptom yet with variations.
I do however still have a slight suspicion that we don't have all that is connected with MS 100% figured out!

You all continue to be a wealth of knowledge ~Thanks

                    Burning mouth

I too have burning mouth syndrome. I also have a geographical tongue, which the coating on my tongue moves in patches.my doctor at first thought it to be thrush, I was treated for that, but that's not what it was.
The burning i have is my tongue, and roof of my mouth. It goes away for about 2 weeks and returns. Nothing I do helps relieve it.
I have developed a total body burn, not like menopause heat flashes. ( I am 51) It burns. Getting liver checked again, as it can cause body burning.
If BMS is thought to be neurological, and MS patients have it, then why isn't it an MS symptom!!!????

When you search old threads, tongue issues come up from time to time, and there are
more people, than I would've thought, who have the symptoms from time to time, some
                      as a regular symptom.

I've had one sided tongue issuesfrom the beginning, never really gone away, just varies in intensity. I just saw a specialist (other neuro within the same practice as my regular neuro) who my neuro thought might have a handle on my issues. I haven't been able to stick my tongue out for a few years, but now it's laying almost laterally in my mouth. The goal was to determine if
this was from spasticity, in which case botox would have been used, or from another reason.

This neuro agreed with the other neuros in the practice that it's good old fashioned atrophy,
and botox would make it worse. Whatever muscle/muscless hold the tongue in place, have just weakened on one side and given up the "fight" to hold my tongue straight in my mouth. All is exacerbated, as far as pain and function, by chewing and speaking. I go for a follow up to see what we'll do about the problem.

All that to say, I think from what I've read on this board, tongue issues are not that "rare", but
there are so many things to blame the tongue problems on, dental issues, TMJ, BMS, that
MS is considered as the least likely cause. Early on in my MS journey (before we knew I was dealing with MS) was when this tongue problem first appeared. Back them, and hopefully not now,
the primary case for tongue pain in women was listed as emotional issues. It was like that for
many years, so if you reported tongue pain, the doctor may have thought stress, or depression, etc. I just plugged tongue pain and emotional problems into google...anxiety causing the tongue
problem took up the entire first page of google search results.
