    Crippling muscle spasms

After 20+ yrs with MS, I've gone from RRMS to SPMS, which is common per my MS Specialist after this long. Several weeks ago I had a few tests done to determine why I've been getting so weak so easily. Doc says it's the progression of the condition. About a week ago I began having these horrible spasms in my right thigh. When they pop up, the slightest touch makes it worse. I've never had any this intense. I'm already taking muscle relaxers and pain med. can anyone offer any tips to help ease the pain?
Possible MS 1993, RRMS, Dx 2007, SPMS 2013. Avonex - Oct '07 - Jul '12, Gilenya - Sept '12 to May '13, Tecfidera - June '13 to present. You see things as they are and you ask why..I dream of things that never were and I ask 'Why Not?!'

I have PPMS and suffer from bad muscle spasms, pain and spasticity. I use MMJ and it helps greatly. If there is any way you can legaly obtain it I highly recommend trying it.

      Curious,

So sorry to hear that you are having so much discomfort.

I too have severe muscle spasms in my left leg. My neuro has me on Baclofen 1 tablet every eight hours, Neurontin 300mg 2 capsules 3 x a day and he said I can take tylenol as a chaser so to speak. for in-between.

But I take advil instead, because, it works faster and the fact that he added percocet 5-325 for night time as I can not get a good nights sleep.

But I found while the above meds help, they really do not take care of the spasms.

I get adjustments from my chiropractor, use heat packs and ice packs. And slow and steady stretching. Not sure why the spasms continue.

But my faith gets me through.

I pray that you find relief and peace with your ms.

Please try eliminating all added sugars and syrups from your diet. For me, they trigger the cramps within hours and I´ve "tested" it far too many times.

Besides Baclofen and Tizanidine for spasticity...

Curcumin, derived from the spice Tumeric, is very effective at suppressing nerve and arthritic pain. Google: curcumin nerve pain

Curcumin is also in clinical trial as a RRMS therapy.

The Curcumin you want is with Bioperine which greatly improves absorption in the intestinal track. Swanson's Vitamins makes a product called "Curcumin Complex" that includes this and I would suggest taking one capsule every 12 hours and see if it helps.

I'd also suggest getting adequate Magnesium, Calcium and Potassium in your diet as they are all important for nerve conduction and muscle contraction. If you want to supplement, Swanson's offers a product called "Triple Magnesium Complex" and "Calcium 2 AEP".

Calcium 2 AEP has been used a MS therapy in Germany and it is believed to defend myelin cells from attack. Google: multiple sclerosis calcium 2 aep

I've taken all this stuff for years and I'm not promoting Swanson's specifically, but it's where I shop.

Dietary Supplement of Curcumin in Subjects With Active Relapsing Multiple Sclerosis Treated With Subcutaneous Interferon Beta 1a (CONTAIN)

This is a prospective, monocentric, double blind, placebo controlled, two arm study.

Curcumin is derived from the rhizomes of the plant Curcuma longa (common name, turmeric) belonging to the Zingiberaceae family found in South Asian countries, especially India which is the largest producer. BCM95 (bioCurcumin) is a combination of a Curcumin extract and oil to enhance the bio-absorbability in humans. BCM95 may enhance and prolong the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of the standard therapy maintaining a good safety profile.
