    Leg just giving out

Recently I've developed an issue where my left knee will decide to just give out. No triggers and no warning. I'll go to step on the leg and it just a buckles underneath me. Luckily it doesn't happen frequently, about a half-dozen times within the last few weeks. This has resulted in a couple falls and several 'good saves'. I already often use a cane but in this situation it doesn't seem to help, I actually landed on my cane on one of my falls.

I see my MS specialist later next month and will update him with this but I'm wondering if anyone out there has experienced this as a symptom.
Possible MS 1993, RRMS, Dx 2007, SPMS 2013. Avonex - Oct '07 - Jul '12, Gilenya - Sept '12 to May '13, Tecfidera - June '13 to present. You see things as they are and you ask why..I dream of things that never were and I ask 'Why Not?!'

    Hi Curious1,

It's probably time to see a Physical Therapist(PT).

Many times, but not always, muscles for the leg and knee need strengthening. It is so easy due to improper gait and a more sedentary life to lose muscle or not use all of the muscle groups needed to support the leg and knee.

Depending on an individuals MS progression sometimes PT will not help. However, many times PT does help but you also need to continue the exercises on your own.

I have experienced what you are several times and time after time PT has shown to be helpful, for me.

In the meantime it might be a good idea to use a walker for more stability and to prevent falls.

    Take care

That happens to me too. I'll go through a period where it happens way too frequently (a few times a day), and then I'll go a while without it happening at all, or only when I'm tired.

I don't know if it is a coincidence, but for a while, I was going to the gym a lot doing Zumba all the time and weight training once a week, and back then, I normally didn't have any issues with a leg giving out. Now, I'll go once in a blue moon, and it seems like my legs have been giving out more frequently again.

I wish I could say more about it, but my neuro didn't say one word about it when I talked about my symptoms, so I've never been given a professional opinion about it.

        Happens to me regularly

I've always caught myself before falling. My wife notices this happening to me and it is her signal that I'm getting tired. My neuros have no comment about it's importance and haven't suggested any help.
