    Anyone else?

I was diagnosed in October, so I'm pretty new to the MS world. I have a pretty intense tightness in my right side along with quite a few "phantom itching" spells. This has been constant for about 6 months now. It's worse when I have to walk a lot or with extreme temperatures. Anyone else experience this? Is there anything that can ease the sensation? I've discussed this with my neurologist, but he isn't always helpful regarding my symptoms.

    Hi apegirl,

Welcome to MS World! I'm sorry for the reason you are here, but I hope you will find this site as informative and supportive as I have.

Tightness in MS is caused by spasticity, and the itching is one of several different sensory symptoms known as paresthesias MS patients experience. There is medication for both. Baclofen and Tizanidine are the most frequently prescribed medications for spasticity, and Gabapentin or Lyrica can help with the itching. Non pharmaceutical relief for spasticity includes stretching and physical therapy; for itching it can be by altering the sensation, such as by using cold therapy. Cooling vests can be a godsend for dealing with hot temperatures.

Here's a few links for you about spasticity, itching, and cooling vests:

There is also something known as the MS hug, which feels like tightening around the chest. I'm not sure if that could be what you are referring to or not, so here is another link: http://www.nationalmssociety.org/abo...ain/index.aspx

I hope you find this information helpful.

    Best Wishes,
    Kimba

WELCOME TO MSWORLD! We are glad to have you here, but sorry that you had to find us. I was going to chime in, but I was beaten to it, and I cannot add anything more.you may want to look into air-conditioning to help battle the heat. Best of luck to you.

Hello! Sounds like you are experiencing the MS Hug. It's no fun but there are ways to deal with it. Kimba mentioned some meds and cooling accessories that make a major difference for some people. I keep my hug under control the best when my temperature is under control.

Also, sorry you are having a hard time with your neuro but please know that your symptoms matter and many can be managed.
