    Hearing issues

From time to time, my hearing will become muddled. Its almost like driving with the window down and then someone rolls up the window. In fact, the hearing goes away just like that, almost from the bottom up. It doesn't go completely away, it just gets quiet or muffled.

Today, while in the car, a song came on the radio and after a few seconds I recognized the lyrics but not the melody. I thought to myself, "It must be a "live version" or remix". I didn't think much of it. After lunch the same thing happened but with a different song. I had a co-worker with me and I mentioned that I liked the song, but not "this version". She said that was the only version she had ever heard. It was so strange...the words were the same but the melody was not. It happened again a little later, I didn't mention it that time

Is it possible that I am having some kind of hearing issues? I have also had issues with my singing, like not being able to catch the tune. That has never happened to me before. Maybe I am actually on tune but my ears just aren't hearing properly. It's just so strange.

The part where your hearing gets quiet or muffled sounds like a hearing issue because volume and frequency are sound transmission issues.

The part about recognizing the lyrics but not the melody might be more than a hearing issue. The ear transmits sound. It can't tell the difference between lyrics and music so it can't filter out just the music part and leave the lyrics and singing alone. Some of the frequencies of the music might drop out but the melody should still be recognizable.

If the melody and the music weren't recognizable, that might be a processing problem instead of or in addition to a hearing problem. In MS both things can happen.

The only way to know is to see your doctor and have your hearing tested. Just one more annoying MS thing.

I had this as an adverse reaction to Tegretol. I could hear music, but all the notes were flat and sour. Its a rare side effect and my MS specialist said it was affecting the way my brain processed what I was hearing. It can also happen just because of MS and not just because of a med. My hearing of music returned to normal within a week of stopping Tegretol.
