Anyone else have a dry cough from Tec?

About 1-2 hours after each pill I get this dry cough. Almost an uncontrollable urge to cough as if someone is pushing on my windpipe. Then this wimpy little dry cough or two and I am fine for a few minutes before it starts again. It lasts for about 1-2 hours and then stops. Been on tecfidera for 1.5 weeks and have had this side effect since day one. Drs office said its not a usual side effect and not to worry unless I can't breathe. Just wondering if anyone else has it too.

Hi Carrie! I don't have a dry cough but I do get a drippy nose and some days my throat is sore, sota scratchy. It hits me between 3 to 4 hours after I take my Tec and last for about an hour. Its almost like a warning bell..Tec side effects about to kick in..I have been on Tec for just over a month now and the side effects are better, but it still "lets me know" that its on board.

Could the feeling of something pushing on your windpipe be acid reflux? Some people take Zantac, Pepcid, etc when they take their dose.

Perhaps it couldn't hurt to try an antacid to see if it helps.

      Good luck.

        Dry Cough?

New to the board...just switched to Tecfidera on Tuesday this week... have had a dry cough for the few hours after I take it (amongst the fantastic stomach pain and flushing so bad my whole body looks and feels like I'm sunburned)...really hoping things get better soon!!

I don't experience a dry cough, but do experience congestion in my ears and head. This doesn't kick in until maybe 2 hours after I take the pill and lasts about an hour. Strange symptom. We should report these to the FDA, since it seems many people on these posts are mentioning sinus issues. Not anything to be alarmed about, but a symptom they could list on their drug prescribing information.

            Dry Cough! Holy cow

I'm so happy to read that this is coming up- not because I love coughs, obviously, but because I have had a month long, dry/unproductive cough that frequently leads to gagging and vomit-reflex, however nothing ever happens- it's just the gagging.

Last time I had a cough this long, it was productive and a lung infection from tysabri, which led to becoming asthmatic. But my inhaler doesn't help this breathing difficulty.

Anyway yeah. It feels like this would totally make sense.

thanks for posting about your experience...

              Cough? Oh Yes

Immediately after starting tec, I had really bad allergies for 3 days (runny nose, sneezing, sinus pressure..) then those syptoms went away and I immediately developed a dry, uncontrollable cough. I told my Neuro about it at the 1 month mark. He said the cough was probably not due to tec, but might be post nasal drip. It's been two months now and I'm still coughing.....I wonder...

I saw my neuro's assistant, who said the cough is probably from acid reflux from the GI thing, reaching the esophagus and triggering a cough. She prescribed me "protonix" or something. Haven't picked it up yet.

                Good luck!

Thx for sharing. That does make sense that it could be acid reflux. I usually start coughing a short time after I eat or drink something.

                    Dry Mouth

I just started taking Tec 6 days ago, and about 3-4 hours after I take my dose, I get INCREDIBLE dry mouth.

I generally do try to stay well hydrated, so this was quite shocking to me.

I am also experiencing an increase in my fatigue level. Luckily, I haven't experienced any of the other side effects.

I've been on it about 2 1/2 months and yes, I have a dry cough & runny nose. With taking a low-dose aspirin & probiotic before my morning dose, I seem to have worked past the other side effects, though.

                          side effects

well after everything i've been on over 11 years this is a piece of cake, a little sun burn and for a brite white person that helps from time to time, then the stomach ache reminds me to go potty, then the itching reminds me to get some lotion and not the cheap stuff, last but not least the cough and running nose, been dealing with that for years with all the other diseases going on, all in all i'm pleased. the BEST thing about this stuff is when i start it i was afraid, big time, with in the first 10 days all the stuff i lost when i was 1st dx'd came back, i can be happy, my doc took me off all my pain pills, no pain, really a blessing, i don't know how long this is going to last but please let it be awhile..
