    Ringworm Anyone???

    Hi All,

Has anyone developed any type(s) of fungal infections since starting G? I have been on G for almost 10 months and have developed ringworm.

I've been racking my brain (what's left of it) trying to figure out how I contracted it under my left breast, since I'm not in the habit of walking around with it exposed!

I first blamed it on a bra fitting at Macy's, the only place I could think of coming in contact with it. Now, after reading the prescribing information that comes in the G pack, I see it can be a side effect of G.

I initially was treating the area with OTC Lotrimin, but now it has continued across and down my abdomen, almost to my bikini line. Needless to say, I have an appointment with my PCP on Wednesday and have discussed treating it with oral Nizoral. Now I see in the prescribing info that this drug (Ketoconazole) is contraindicated with Gilenya (can increase liver side effects). BUT OF COURSE!!!!!

Anybody have any experiences with this? If so, how did you treat?

Thanks, Cat (and no, I didn't get it from my cat )

I think you never know where you got a skin infection. I think we can also get them from pets as well as objects and other people.

Ringworm is the same fungus as athlete's foot, jock itch, etc. Before you try an oral antifungal, there are lots of topical ones to try, so keep on your doctor.

Good thing you checked it out, but ask. Many of us who take avonex also take pain killers, all of which are contraindicated for the same reason. But I would try lots of things before an oral antifungal. One more thing - are you sure it's ringworm? GPs are not skin specialists and in any case, it may be time to see a dermatologist.

Topical anti-fungal creams like Canestan or Daktarin clear this up in a coupla days. Any drug that suppresses the immune system leaves you wide open to fungal and bacterial infection. Don't let it frighten you mate - Pro-biotics will also help as the bacterial/fungal balance within the body is very interesting.

I would recommend reading a book called "The Body at War" by John M Dwyer to anyone on drugs that have the potential to suppress th immune system. it is very illuminating to us folk and help to make clear what happens if that balance goes awry.
