    Vitamin D - too much?

How much is too much? Is anyone else taking 50,000U twice a week? My neurologist prescribed this and I was sharing with my dermatologist and he was shocked with amount. Previously I was taking 50,000U once a week but she decided to increase it. My Vit D levels are low.

I've read that Vit D can be toxic, but haven't been able to find out a lot about it. I did read that adults shouldn't take more than 2000 a day.

I don't see my dr again until sept and I don't have money to make another appt before then.

Did you ask your Dr why the amt was so high?

Recently my Vit D level went all the way down to 8. I started on 2000 IU a day, had it rechecked in 30 days.

It went up to 27, but my neuro thought it was still just a bit low so we added another 1000 IU daily.

I've heard of one person taking 10,000 but never as high of amt as you are taking.

Again, I would suggest a good talk with your neuro about the levels that you are taking, as it is possible to take too much per WebMD.

But we can't make that call here.

It isn't unusual to get an Rx for a high amount like that to temporarily boost your levels until they reach a desirable amount. I got an Rx for that amount before for 8 weeks and then went down to 5,000 a day.

Yes, excess vitamin D can technically be toxic but if your levels are being regularly checked, it is pretty difficult to actually get into the toxic level.

How low is low in regards to your Vit. D level? When I was 1st tested, I was at 28. My neuro put me on 50,000 once a week for a month. I am currently taking 55,000 a week ( 10,000 units every other day; 5000 on the other days)to stay between 60-80 I don't think I'd rely on your dermatologist for their opinion unless they also have a great deal of knowledge about MS. I've heard of others taking much more than I.

I've been through this vitamin D debate several times over the last 6 years. Some doctors want to get your vitamn D levels between 25 and 50 ng/mL. Some like to see the levels above 50ng/mL.
I was at 18 ng/mL and my PCP told me to take 1000 IU's daily. My levels didn't change much. I was told to increase the dose to 2000 IU's daily. The blood levels rose a little bit, but I didn't see much of an increase until I began taking 5000 IU's daily. My levels are now above 65 ng/mL.
The trick, IMO, is to get your blood levels tested every 6 months and adjust your vitamin D dose accordingly. Good luck

I was taking by prescription 135,000 IU per week. I was in the single digits.

Fast forward a few months my vitamin D was about 260. Anything over 150 is considered toxic. However...I was showing no signs of toxicity. In fact I felt pretty darn good.

However my MS specialist took me off Vitamin D for 60 days and I retested in the 40s. Doesn't take long to leave the system.

I am currently on 7,000 IUs a day and we try to keep my Vitamin D between 80-120...which is higher than people without MS.

I think Vitamin D is as important. However it should be monitored by a doctor. They take a blood draw when I get my TY infusion.

Can you request a blood test even if you aren't seeing the doc until September? That way you will have peace of mind.

I take 4000/day; it keeps my levels between 55-60 ng/ml. Some people need a lot more, and others a lot less. It really varies so much, and people with MS are statistically likely to need more D3 than the average person.

50,000 for awhile (as said above) isn't all that weird in the short term (short term potentially being months). It takes a lot of time to get levels up, and boosting them more quickly takes more D.

I was taking 5,000 a day and went fron 24 to a whopping 28. Up to 10,000 a day now.

At my worst relapse my level was 11. Now my neuro wants me between 80-100. She just increased me from 2000 Dalit to 4000. My level was 46 on 2000.
