    disability and insurance

I just got approved for disability (first time applied). It only starts in October. Medicare dosen't start till 2 years later. The money I get for disability barely covers my house payments and other bills much less me getting insurance. I'll making half of what I made a year when I worked . My prescriptions with co-pay runs around $2,000 a year. So now what, stop taking my pills so I can eat. I already had to give up driving because of MS what else???? Where do I turn to for help, I don't know where to go or what to do???? I don't know what my options are?????

Apply for Medicaid as soon as you can. Because you have already been determined as disabled, Medicaid can't turn you down for that reason. However, depending on whether you get family coverage (with children) or disability coverage, you may have something called a spenddown, which would be like a monthly deductible you would have to meet, but you won't know until you try. Since Illinois covers parents up to a certain percent of the poverty level, I'm covered through the family plan, but I also have SLMB, where Medicaid covers all of my copays and expenses outside of Medicare.

Prescription Assistance & Real Estate tax Homestead reduction

Please look on your county auditor's website, or phone their office regarding the real estate tax homestead reduction which will reduce your real estate tax. If they don't have the info when you phone, google it for your county to see if your county offers the homestead real estate tax reduction. Also check on any life insurance policies that you may have, some have reduced premiums for sickness. Below is a very helpful post from Victor on the MS World board. Also google medical assistance for your state. Some states offer different helpful medical assistance programs. I know this isn't a defined helpful answer. Phone your county for their office which lists befefits it has available for you. The MS Association website has cooling equipment and other equipment and helpful information. You can google their website for info. You can also google to see if they have an organization near your residence
