    Trigeminal Neuralgia Treatments

I wasn't sure where to put this, if anywhere. My neuro is an MS specialist, but she has ruled it out for me (clean MRI & good exam). She still sees me for some other neurological problems. She recently diagnosed me with trigeminal neuralgia but she was in a hurry and didn't have time to discuss treatments. I thought you ladies and gentlemen might have some insight, even for someone who doesn't have MS. She said that after blood work, EKG, and another head MRI, I can see a headache specialist for possibilities like nerve blocks. But as far as medication - I'm not sure of the differences? The options were anti seizures or amitriptyline. I'm concerned about sleepiness (already have fibro and fatigue) and other side effects. She didn't give me a list of possible choices and I don't remember the specific anti-seizure medications she mentioned. What would be the usual? The treatment is very different for MS-TN and non-MS TN, correct?

She did say the anti-seizure medications are "old school". Not sure if that includes Carbamazepine?

I found Carbamazepine extremely effective for TN but ended up going off it due to fatigue, and onto Gabapentin. It doesn't work quite as well and I've had to take it up to 4x per day at times, but my quality of life is much better from a fatigue perspective.
