    The waiting game

    Hello,
I am not yet diagnosed with MS. I do have some questions and a back story.
3 years ago, I started having agonizing muscle spasms in my thigh. It was a pain like no other. I was also extremely fatigued, and had issues grabbing small objects. Oh and it gets a LOT worse in the heat.
I went to Neuro #1. They tested for everything- Lupus, B12, and a whole host of everything else.
    Nothing.
MRI #1- nothing. (it was in a poor city with bad healthcare).
    Moved to Houston.
Agony. But I did get to go to Baylor. They did their MRI, and found a mildly compressing disc in my spine at T6. The tech saw small t2 lesions in my cervical spine. The doctor disagreed. No lesions or anything in my brain.

They told me to get a spinal tap, I chickened out and never did.

Moved back to PA. Got pregnant in the summer, poof! issues magically disappeared. I did not have any issues my entire pregnancy.

Wouldnt a bulging disc, under the weight of a child make it worse, and therefore my issues get worse?

Had my child in February. (btw- I handled contractions like a pro. Until the C-section, I didnt have any drugs. The contractions were so much LESS pain than my muscle spasms).

The day after I had him, my muscle spasms came back in full force in BOTH legs. This made me cry, for many reasons. I was in so much pain, but the doctors couldnt do anything to help me with that pain.

I recover from my c-section, its cooler weather, not much pain, not many issues.

Then one day it hits 80. Bam. Agony. I had intense pain in my usual leg, with both legs feeling very heavy. It felt like I had those sand weights on my ankles. Also, my foot now has a propensity to go numb.

Today I went on a decent walk in the morning (70s with humidity), and was okay. I also ran errands. I was okay. 3pm rolls around and Im exhausted. We run more errands, and I have to sit down as my husband finishes grocery shopping. I go blank, cant think right, and feel foggy.

I need to make another neuro appointment. I do not want to. I have good days and bad days. Should I make a neuro appointment, or wait til its hotter and I get worse?

Im almost 24. Could just a "mildly compressing disc" be causing all of this? Are there other demyelative diseases that cause this? I do not have visions problems. Oh and it gets worse before and during my period... which is weird.

What should I do now? Im so sick of Neuros looking at me like Im a hypochondriac. Im young and a girl, I guess that discredits the pain I say I am in.

    Please advise, thank you.

Hi Allison and welcome to MSWorld.

Im young and a girl, I guess that discredits the pain I say I am in.
I don't believe your age is the issue. I was your age at the time I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and my Drs. took me seriously.

They did their MRI, and found a mildly compressing disc in my spine at T6. The tech saw small t2 lesions in my cervical spine. The doctor disagreed. No lesions or anything in my brain.
What do you do? I would suggest seeing your Primary Care Physician and ask his/her professional opinion as to what you do next. Make sure you provide all test result to your PCP. Your PCP can refer you to the appropriate specialist, if needed.

    Take care!

      Hi Allison,
I'm sorry you're going through this. I too hate going to the Drs and feeling like a hypochondriac so I get it. I have a demyelinating lesion at C2 with a positive lumbar puncture although I am not dx'ed yet. Some days are good and some are crappy depending on my activity level. I too feel like I am having unusually worse symptoms leading up to my period. My gait is so much worse and it took me months to figure out the relationship between the two. My legs are heavier, I trip more, and of course my anxiety goes through the roof. I'm wondering if anyone feels the same with their menstrual cycle bc it's a very real thing for me every month. I see my neuro in July and it's the first question on my list I want answered. Best of luck to you on your journey. Stay positive.

Women with MS can have a temporary increase MS symptoms due to hormonal fluctuations (menstrual cycle, ovulation). However, this phenomenon is not exclusive to MS and happens for women who have other types of health issues. Example: Those who have epilepsy have an increase in seizures.

These two links give an explanation about this topic:
