    Need advise / Babinski test

    Hi All,

You may have seen some of my previous posts. I've been in limbo for a little over a year. Just got recently diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia.

So Neuro at hospital has confirmed the TN and will be sending me for tests that I'm not sure of yet..but apparently he needs a specialised Radioligist to read the MRI of Trigeminal Nerve..also doing something for my neck..and I'll find out soon enough about test.

I just recently visited my MS specialist. He had told me back in Sep '12 that if any of my symptoms lasted more then 24hrs to come back and see him....so tingling/burning and occasional pain in my face for 2 months would warrant a visit.

It turns out that my ENT doc is sending my for a brain MRI just to rule out MS..which is happening on Feb2.

So went to the MS specialist on Jan 22 '13....he seemed a lot more serious with me this time then last...he once again wanted to know what lasted more then 24hrs..told him Dizziness back in Oct 2011 and July 2012 both lasted about 2 months..and TN that started in Nov 2012 untill present (however it is improving)

I didn't even mention all the other weird stuff that's been going on but was not as serious or as lasting.

He did reflex test...in the past my feet have always curled downwards and my knee reflex are ok..right is always a little more excited then left.

This time...Left foot...toes did not move and big toe looked like it moved slighty to side..kinda towards me..but did not curl like I've seen on net...my knee reflex was very minor on that side too

Right foot...no movement at all! And knee reflexes almost hit doc with my leg.

I go back to his other office, he takes his list of patients and rights an A beside my name...I then as him if I should continue to see the neuro at hospital (that's where his office is) or if I should just see him... He seemed serious and said.."no see me"

Went to see his secretary..and told her to book me a fallow up after MRI. She tells me that 1st appoint is 28 Feb..then I say ok...but then she continues to talk to herself as if trying to find something earlier..then says I'll squeeze you in on 12th.

Has anyones reflex changed during their diagnosis time...doc was so laid back with me last time..I think I got his attention this time...

Does toe need to completly curl back..or is any sign of movement of big toe not that good?

    thx

For babinski the big toe needs to lift up and the rest of the toes need to spread apart outward.

You have a brisk reflex on your right leg, which could mean spasticity. My guess is that the Tingling, and the TN got him to order the MRI.

    Good luck with it!

I've had a change in my Babinski as my spinal cord lesions got worse and then better again.

My neuro said that to be a positive Babinski, the big toe has to go up. Slightly to the side doesn't count and isn't a Babinski. No movement even if the big toe used to curl under isn't a Babinski. That doesn't mean that there isn't something going on tho because something has changed. Hyper reflexes happen with spinal cord lesions, so there could be something going on there even if you don't have a positive Babinski. The best person to ask is your neuro.

        Hi,

Thanks guys for info! I was so surprised that I had changed...I was in shock and didn't even ask him...my Neuro seemed serious especially when he said that I need to continue and follow up with him and not my other neuro.
Glad that I didn't have Babinski...but worried about the change since Sep! Only one week left for MRI

        Take care guys!
p.s. Lisa glad to hear that your back home!

Normal adult reflex is for the toes to go down. Just a couple toes went up on my foot and they considered it a positive.
