My Neurologist Thinks I Have Multiple Sclerosis

My Neurologist thinks I have Multiple Sclerosis,I agree with him.He gave me a clinical exam(which I failed badly, diagnosed me with migraines & that coupled with my diagnosis of Polyneuropathy(confirmed with EMG/NCV,by another Neurologist.) He told me that my symptoms, his Neurological exam,& my EMG results made him want to check for MS lesions(even though the first MRI I had last year for MS,showed no lesions(it was without contrast dye.)

At first I was warily looking forward to the MRI(I didn't want to do it) but my Neurologist insisted. He said I could have lesions on my spinal cord in my neck area, that the brain only MRI wouldn't have found.

Well I had the MRI yesterday.I got a couple of the images on CD. I looked over the images myself. At this point I'd be even more shocked If I didn't get an MS diagnosis.

Hi BrainFighter and Welcome to MSWorld.

If your EMG/NCV came back positive this would not indicate MS. These tests are not part of the diagnostic criteria for MS but for other conditions.

Contrast is not needed for a MRI to show abnormalties (Lesions). If a MRI is clear (negative) without contrast it will still be negative with contrast. Contrast shows abnormalties that are currently active (inflammation).

    Hope you get answers soon.

It's important that you get a correct diagnosis. There's no good from getting an MS diagnosis if you don't have it. It's like stopping a murder investigation when they have the wrong guy. I sat in limbo for 2 long weeks and it was bad, so I can't imagine doing it longer - but I do know that doctors are sometimes happy to diagnose MS where it isn't there. So be patient.

And BTW, the MRI isn't terrible unless you have genuine claustrophobia. I recommend taking a tranquilizer beforehand.

Look... I admit I am a sissy boy. i was very wary of getting in the machine. I did 4 MRI's in 2009 and the last one was with gadolinium (contrast). I would say between the MRI results and a pretty extensive examination, I was diagnosed quickly.
You should do all of the tests and blood tests that you can do. MS is a slippery critter to catch. I suggest you know all that can be learned about the condition of your blood, your hormones, your organ function... etc. Good luck

My GP got my MRI report yesterday. I called the office & they said they haven't reviewed it yet. I called my Neuro's office & they don't have it at all yet. This sucks & is making my symptoms worse & making me anxious.

There are several conditions that can mimic MS. Therefor these need to be ruled out. Low vitamin B-12 and Lyme disease and Candida yeast overgrowth are among those mimics. These can all be found through proper testing. Testing is cheaper and easier than actually treating MS randomly. Good luck

i'm sorry you are going through this. have you had blood tests done and an LP?

Poloyneuropathy is not generally associated with MS...it generally has an association with the anatomic nervous system vs the central nervous system which is what MS attacks.

Have you been tested for Lupus? Your neuro should do this with a comprehensive blood test.

I can see why they would want to rule out MS though...often different diseases mimic others and are caused by other parts of our nervous system...but have similar symptoms.

I'd also get a second opinion on the polyneuropathy even though it was confirmed. neurologists are great, but an ms specialist can put it all together better than a general neuro. they are used to ruling out other diseases, and know what to look for when ruling in or out MS - if that makes sense.

I'm not saying Lupus or vit b deficiency, but it's something to keep in mind while persuing this.

Also - IMO, your MRI is taking too long to come back. Sorry you have to wait out the weekend and holiday.
