    Are blood tests necessary?

I've been reading about diagnosing MS... again... and most of the material mentions blood testing. I've never heard of any blood tests for MS. Can anyone tell me anything about this?

    Hi Marti,

You are correct that there is no blood test for MS. But the blood testing is necessary to rule out other conditions.

At this time, there are no symptoms, physical findings or laboratory tests that can, by themselves, determine if a person has MS. Several strategies are used to determine if a person meets the long-established criteria for a diagnosis of MS, and to rule out other possible causes of whatever symptoms the person is experiencing.

Here is more information about how MS is diagnosed:

Thanks. I was dx by MRI and symptoms. But I've always wondered about blood testing.

Because MS is diagnosed by 'exclusion', it is absolutely necessary to use as many blood tests as your doctor can use to 'exclude' any 'mimics' of MS that could be causing your system to malfunction ! Make sure that your vitamin D and vitamin B-12 levels are at optimum levels . Good luck

          But they're working on one

I don't know what happened with this, but there seemed to be an effort earlier this year:

(let's see if the link survives--because "multiplesclerosisnewstoday.com" might not be relevant enough)

**Moderator's Note: The above link is OK, however there is a pop up which offers you to subscribe to their emails. Simply hit "No Thanks" and you can then read the article**
