Can relapses happen back to back

I have a few questions about relapses:

    1) Do new ones have to start 30 days after you make a full recovery from the initial one, or is it 30 days from the beginning of your symptoms

    2) Can symptoms improve during a relapse and new ones appear

I started a relapse at the beginning of September and made close to a full recovery about two weeks ago. However, as I was improving my intermittent tingling in left leg is now tingly all the time. Stiffness in leg is now gone, but has been replaced by greater weakness.

As things have changed I am not sure if this is just a continuation of the initial relapse or if I have had two back to back.

My non-textbook say it ain't so answer is:

Two years ago, I had a really bad flare. It would not get better...only worse. However, the steroids did stop the ON. Lasted about 6 months.

I had just moved and was being treated at both a major Medical Center and the VA. I finally got in to see a MS Specialist at Month 5. He reviewed all the MRIs (4 total) from the Medical Center and the VA...and he told me I was having cyclical flares....continuous...no breaks. Up to that point, I did not know that was possible.

I had to go on Tysabri to break the cycle.

New symptoms can pop up as well during flares. Let your Neuro know and go from there.

Flares can really suck the life out of you. I hope things improve for you real soon.

      1. A relapse must be separated from the previous one by at least 30 days to be considered a 2nd neurological event. While the majority of relapses last weeks, there are some flare ups that last many months.
      2. Yes.
      3. I hope your situation improves quickly and you have a complete recovery. Please keep us informed of your progress, but more importantly keep your neurologist in the loop. Did you have steroids? Is your neurologist currently considering any additional interventions?

In my non-professional but personal opinion, yes! ;-)

During my first two years after diagnosis I seemed to never get completely better. One problem would slowly go away and new ones would appear.

However, I have been fairly stable now for a coue of years, so don't give up hope. I have felt really quite good lately. Sure, I still have some really bad days or periods of time but it can get better!!! Hang in there! Hugs!
