    Heart disease like symptoms?

I am a 30 year old male, diagnosed with MS a little over a year ago. My initial symptoms were dizziness with an odd electric feeling that would pulse through my head, right arm and right leg. In the subsequent year I have settled into a routine of occasional numbness on the right side of my face, tingling in my right leg/foot, and occasional stiffness in my right arm.

However, I have recently developed some new symptoms that seem to be a bit different. It started 3 weeks ago with fatigue well beyond what i generally experience. I fell asleep on a sunday while I was in the middle of typing an email. This is not unusual for many people, but I had literally only taken 1 nap in my entire life prior to this.

It then progressed the next day to an odd tingling feeling in my chest, right above my heart. It is hard to really put it into words, but I would compare it to the feeling that you get when you are really nervous about something. This was also accompanied by losing my breath with very little exertion. (However, in thinking about it i think this symptom actually began prior to the feeling in my chest)

I went to the ER, where they gave me an EKG and did blood work, which all came out normal. They were able to compare it to an EKG I had a little over a year ago as well, and found "no significant changes." They put a 24-hour heart monitor on me and referred me to a cardiologist to follow up.

The cardiologist said the results of my 24-hour monitor were normal but ordered an echo test to check the structure of my heart, which also came back normal.

However, a day or two later i started experiencing pain & tightness in my chest, numbness and pain in my left arm, tingling in my jaw, pain on the side of my neck, and even pain in my ear. I have not previously had any MS symptoms on the left side of my body.

I felt like I might be having a heart attack, so I went back to the emergency room. Another EKG came back normal, and they sent me on my way. I called my cardiologist and he ordered a stress echo to rule out any coronary artery disease since every other test has been negative. I am set to take the test on monday.

In the mean time my shoulder, arm, neck, upper back and ear have taken turns aching/tingling/going numb. My chest has felt mostly tight at times, kind of in a straight line across my pectorals, but sometimes just on on the left side of my chest. I have also experienced a mild burning sensation in a straight line underneath my pecs.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? It obviously sounds like a heart issue, but these tests keep coming back normal, and it is fairly unusual for a 30 year old person to have clogged arteries at this point.

    Call your neurologist

Your symptoms sound very similar to the "MS Hug" symptoms I had right before I was diagnosed. When I called my neurologist, he sent me for an MRI the next day and found a lesion on my spine. My doctor wants me to call with any new symptoms. It sounds like an issue with your heart has been ruled out so I would definitely give the neurologist a call. I was actually prescribed Oxcarbazepine for the pain and it really helped. Hope you are feeling better soon. I'm also newly diagnosed and know how difficult it is to decide if some new feeling/issue is MS-related or something else.

Stomach Ulcers, Gallbladder and GERD can all cause the symptoms you are describing.

I sort of went through the same thing. Of course they did a whole cardiac work up first...it was perplexing until one doc thought maybe it was being caused by my Stomach. They scoped me and found out I had stomach ulcers...and the stomach is located next to the Vagus Nerve. Also found out my Gallbladder was no longer functioning because I was a runner on a zero fat diet...so my gallbladder did not get properly utilized for years.

      Neither were related to MS.

You might want to see a Gastro Doc and get those things checked out.

      Good Luck.

I have symptoms that were originally thought to be cardiac related, but were later determined to be due to a certain lesion and were then acknowledged as being MS related.

You're doing the right thing, having all the cardiac causes ruled out. Next you'll need to see your neuro if your issues are determined not to be a cardiac problem.

Some of the lower cranial nerves can give the same symptoms of heart issues.

        Hope you get some answers.

Only every day. I've been thru all the heart tests etc also. For me.. it comes down to anxiety and I truly believe that a lot of autoimmune diseases have a kind-of built in anxiety symptom. How could you NOT be worried??

I take a tiny bit of Xanax when I get the panic attack feeling and in 20 minutes I am much better.

I know it's going to keep you worked up and scared. But keep up with your cardio doctor.. just in case. Mention this to your neuro also.

I really wish you didn't have to go through this. I know how awful it is.

I have also been to the ER on 2 different occasions and had all the work-ups for my heart. All came back normal. I just went to the doc yesterday with that same feeling. MS HUG. Funny the nurse even said well who wants a hug like that. A steroid shot and a prescription for more.

Hopefully it gets better in a few days.

I also have had my gallbladder taken out, I do have IBS, I have stomach ulcers and take meds for all that.

Hard to figure this monster out sometimes.

            Good luck to you!!!!!

Yeah, this whole thing has really caused my anxiety to go through the roof. I am trying to control it, as I know that getting worked up is neither MS or your heart, but it has been hard not to dwell.

First of all, I am sorry you are going through all this. Enough! I would trust YOUR body and continue to listen to the symptoms.

I went through this, coming up the stairs I felt dizzy, had chest pressure and just didn't feel right. Of course I knew it could be heart related and no one was around to drive me to ER. Finally get to ER, run tests x2 and nothing. Consult Cardiologist and is given ok to go home and if symptoms cont call Cardiologist.

Next day, same symptoms. Get into see Cardio doc and he rules out heart disease via my history. Go home and next day clearly I had signs of potential heart attack. Thi is now 4 days into this..go in for STRESS test and its okay. STILL symptoms are there and Cardiac clinic calsl with possible something seen on pics from stress test and order a Cath test for next morning.

Turns out I had 95% blockage in main artery/vein, not sure now, to heart and lucky I didn't have a MI, but close. THEN I had a reaction following the test and my BP bottomed out. Guess I was close to checking out..NOT my fault, but the procedure was botched. Good grief.

So trust your instincts and consider Heart disease still. I also have Dysautonomia which is complicated by MS or MS complicates Dysautonomia.. lol. Now on meds and doing fine.

I am fine now, wish you to be as well.
Even though ER, Cardiologist and my own primary told me it was not heart related IT WAS!!!

                Glad to still be here..

Let us know what you learn, Good luck!

                  Hmmmm

I'd be thinking of a heart related issue also. Wondering if you are on any medications for MS or related symptoms which might cause that.

I also, besides MS, have Asthma/COPD which can similar shortness of breath issues. We live in NC which is very hot in the summer (kind of Florida minus the beach!) and I get really short of breath with this heat and humidity. So I'm a couch potato a lot of the time and the A/C is going most of the time.

It's frustrating, but for me there has been nothing that has come along to give me the needed energy to do much. I worry about heart disease (which definitely runs in my family) too.

It's good you have been proactive in your care and had the issues looked into.

You are much younger than me ((I'm 69) but it's always possible to have the heart problems.

Well i got the stress echo today, and everything appeared normal with my heart. The cardiologist was in the room with me during the test and said that he saw no evidence of any blockage in my arteries, or any other issue. After looking at the results he said "whatever is causing these symptoms, it is not your heart."

So it seems like i can pretty safely move on to focusing on my MS as the cause.

I wonder if you are disappointed that they didn't find the answer to why you are getting these symptoms, are you?

I just read an article on how autonomic issues are related to some chronic conditions esp MS. I have Dysautonomia but its under control now.

You are in a difficult place because so far the tests are negative. You could ask the cardiologist to do a POTS test which is a Tilt Table to test for autonomic dysfunction. If its positive they put you on a beta blocker usually. BUT if its Dysautonomia that you need a specialist, a neurologist who specializes in testing for that. Sadly, there are few. I was lucky.

Google Dysautonimia syndrome and then there is a forum I've been a part of which is very helpful. Again there could be a basis for all your symptoms. I am afraid this may not just end for you because the tests so far are negative. It was for me, for years, until I had my first Tilt Table test. But I needed more help and my astute Primary referred me to the specialist.

Good luck and let me know how you are doing.
I care what happens to you.

                      Warmly, Jan
