    Question - New lesion found...???

Hi all - so I had an MRI done on Saturday - basically all the information is in another post, but the short story is that my flare-up nearly ended, mostly just numb in hand and a weak leg by Wednesday - and then Thursday morning I woke up to my entire left side of my body in parasthesia state (again) - as well as the lovely MS Hug...
Had MRI's two weeks ago in hospital where they found lesions in various places on my spine and brain.

Well, this time they found a new demyelinated lesion on the right side of the upper pons of my brain stem, which magically appeared Thursday morning! I have a disc of my MRI (which is dangerous LOL) and I can actually See it! weird...

Anyhow, isnt it odd to have a new lesion show up within two weeks of my last MRI?? Maybe they missed it the first time? Still getting to know this disease and my brain - has this ever happened to you?

    stoshoo,

I a sorry about the new lesion. Maybe it was missed with earlier MRI's? (I don't know)

    hugs to you

If it's a relatively small lesion (compared to the resolution of the MRI) it is quite possible it was just missed the first time, falling between the 'slices' of the MRI.

If it's really a new lesion, the report will say that it was enhanced on the scan with contrast, meaning that it's currently actively inflamed (which usually means new).

Have you had any new symptoms Marc?

Did they go back and look at your previous MRI to make sure it wasn't there?

Over a year ago, everything went crazy with one side of my face and tongue (I'd had the symptom for years, but it was bearable, now it got intense.) Add to that heart rate and BP issues that there was no explanation for from the cardiologist or the hypertension specialist, so my neuro ordered an MRI...I hadn't had one for years because I was stable, had symptoms, but they seemed to stay the same. The MRI report came back with nothing new from previous MRIs, nothing seen that would explain the problems.

My issues kept up and were getting worse, so the neuro ordered another MRI about a month later, to specifically look at my brainstem, since all the issues seemed to be symptoms that would be tied to a brainstem lesion. This time, the neuro radiologist read it and found a large lesion in my medulla, and it was blamed for all the issues I was experiencing.

The interesting part was, the neuro radiologist looked back on the previous MRI and noted that the lesion could be seen on that but it wasn't as clear cut , excused it by blaming it on technique used, or something like that. In neither MRI was the lesion enhanced.

I was just glad to have a reason to explain why everything was acting up...don't know about others, but I begin to question myself and wonder if I'm overreacting when things seem so bad and yet there doesn't seem to be an explanation.

The good news, I've now been able to get symptomatic meds for all the issues the lesion causes.

All that to say, I wonder if they compared the two with a neuro radiologist reading the MRIs?

And now for the "disappearing lesion" link I've posted several times. It could answer why the lesion was there so quickly after your last MRI, or wasn't there on the previous one. This is a time lapse of an MSer's brain over the course of a year, he had 24 MRIs in 12 months, then they linked them. During all this activity of coming and going lesions, he was asymptomatic and did not suffer an exacerbation. I find this fascinating.

            enhanced with contrast

Hi - yep it was enhanced with contrast - the neurologist said it would explain my current symptoms... They did a thorough MRI of both brain and spine in the hospital and a neuroradiologist conveyed her findings. I am starting to notice that everyone does have a way - every hospital or medical group probably looks at this stuff with a different eye, so to speak.

I'll find out in a couple hours what the new lesion is all about - will post what she says later!!

Until then - going on day 6 of entire left body parasthesia and what I now understand as the MS Hug (I feel like someone is sitting on my chest/rib cage).

On a lighter note - I am Waaaay caught up on Law and Order thanks to Netflix. lol
