There are several threads discussing stem cell treatments in the "Medications and Treatments" section and the forum on "New Treatments and trials." I think there has been quite a bit of discussion here at MSW on the topic, though I haven't followed the topic and may not even have the exact titles listed correctly.

All my best to your family. Jerry D has some good links about stem cell research and trials in the medication section. Some of it really does sound promising.
No silver bullet, but there is at least hope.
