    Vitamin D levels ?

Anybody have their vitamin D levels tested ? And, what were the results if you don't mind sharing ?

    #2
Yes , mine was down to about 15 if I remember correctly, I now take 3000IU daily and is up to low 70s or so. don't notice any difference tough. My gp says about 80-85% of the people he has tested are really low not just ms'rs. I was amazed mine was low considering that I play golf 3-4 times a week wearing shorts and short sleeve shirt, and I do not use any sun screen either.
Plan for the future, but not too hard; it’s not your decision anyway

Mine was 7. Unfathomable considering I don't burn easily, played on 2 tennis teams, did all yard work for large property, walked in the sun a great deal.

We regularly went to the beach each summer, only used sun screen on my face and neck for wrinkle protection.

Still taking 14,000 to 50,000 depending on current levels, 8 years and counting.

Mine was 13 on diagnosis. Now I take 10,000 units for the past 2 years and I'm around 86. I get tested 2x yearly.

Mine was hovering around 28 which is just outside of low normal so they put me on 2,000 IU per day and now it is at 52, a happy medium.

            low

Every time I have mine tested, it is low.

This time it was 16. Now I am on 50,000 once a week for 8 weeks, then 50,000 every other week.

I usually go up when I do the mega doses but this is the first time that I will follow up with the every other week dose.

My b 12 levels were also low. So, I am taking 500mgs a day of that. I will have that retested in about 6 weeks. If it isn't up, the dr. said injections were an option.

            Yay! more shots!

My doctor and I also discussed if it wouldn't be a good idea for my kids to take extra D.

I see an endocronologist for this. She said 30 is the goal, but she likes her ms patients at 40. I was an 8, and had trouble absorbing it. After 10 weeks of the 50,000 units, I'd get up to a 16. I was put on 50,000 units per day until it built up. Now I take 50,000 twice a week to maintain a 40.

My level was in the 20's when diagnosed with PPMS. I started taking 5000 iu's daily and I was just tested for the third time in 2 years. My current level is 50ng/mL.
If a specialist says that 30 is good, they are being stupid. That number is the FDA number adopted in the 50's or 60's. Look it up.
Most health oriented organizations recommend between that a person test between 50ng/mL and 80ng/mL. And as you can see from the anecdotes posted, you can't rely on sun exposure to keep you at a safe level. Surprise !

What levels for a person with MS?

This is a fact sheet from a large MS clinic in Seattle. You'll note that they recommend levels around 100ng/ml for people with MS.

Note that they also recommend testing 3 months after a dose change. I think how quickly our levels go up depends on many factors. My doctor initially started me on 5000iu per day. For me, it wasn't enough but everyone is different.

I was at 22. 3000IU of D3/day has me at 66 ng/ml at my last check.

I routinely order Vitamin D levels and almost everyone is deficient by the labs standards.

An interesting question posed by a well respected physician was "if everyone is low is the lab standard correct?" I think this might be worth some consideration since throughout the history of medicine we have theories that are thought to be fact that are later found to be flawed. Its worth a second thought anyway imo.

Jules - that's really a good question. That said, it may depend on what part of the country we live in and in any case, vitaminD for people with MS is thought to be a different matter.

I've been supplementing 6,000 IU for approx. 2 years. After approx. 1 year my neuro said my vitamin D levels were great (not sure what they were).

Then in August they were at 93 so he said to stop supplementing for a month. Now I take 2,000 or 4,000 depending on how many pills I shake out. Now I'm curious what my levels are going to be if he tests them in November.

I think mine was like 7 the first time. Went up some then increased Vit D again. Last time it was like fifty something. I take 5000 units of Vit D everyday.

I sure felt better mentally when I got my level up to a normal number.
