Need help fast my neuro may be dropping me or ??

I have been having bad migraines worse than usual.
I have been with my current neuro about 1 1/2 yrs.
She has only made one change in my meds for migraines. When that did not work, I got a call back from her nurse saying.

The dr said she doesn't know what else to do about your migraines. She wants you to see a specialist. This other dr is about 200 miles away. That is not easy for me.
Since it is all tied up with the ms, I feel dumped.
I can't believe she is not making more medication changes than just one! She is a neurologist.

Does it make since to travel that far to see a headache dr and see her for MS?
Should I try and just find another neuro. There are very few neuro's in this area and that is a problem.
I am going to see my GP today.

It does NOT sound like she is dropping you, at least not to me. When a doc thinks its in your best interest to see a specialist, they SHOULD send you to a specialist. No one doc can be a specialist in ALL fields or even their own general field of practice.

You neuro is NOT ignoring you, nor does it sound to me like she is dumping you. Maybe you are jsut expecting more from her than she can handle as a simple practicality?

Take a deep breath and relax.......

Maybe it would be worth seeing a good specialist, even if its a long drive.....ONLY you can decide.

      Not my area but...

I have a very good friend that has suffered from migraines for yrs and her GP has always taken care of it for it. She hasn't seen a Neuro for it. I'm not sure why your GP or Neuro wouldn't help more but I would differently ask for more meds before you travel 200miles!

Again its not my area but my friend has had to go to the ER for her head before so...I feel that I speak about it a smidge. She has found that Topamax has helped her the best.

I wish you loads of luck cuz I know she has wanted to cut her head off before I hope one of your Doc's will help you out.

I don't want to trivialize how you're feeling, but I agree with Gomer. I don't think the Dr. is going to turn you away unless he/she feels they can't help you anymore. I actually respect them more when they admit this- not letting a monster ego get in the way.

Talk to your GP today- hopefully either he'll be able to provide you with something for relief or will refer you to someone quickly- who can!

Take care. Will be thinking of you - let us know what happens

No, you are not being dumped. And in all honesty, it sounds like you have a really good neuro.

Neuros tend to specialize. For example, my neuro specializes in strokes and seizures. He is not comfortable making MS decisions for me so he referred me to an MS Specialist an hour away.

He does all my MS treatment here locally, but he only does it with her consent. I go see her once or twice a year.

I don't have migraines, but I have heard they are very difficult to figure out and it varies with each patient. So neuros who are headache specialists have been born.

If I was having migraines, and I heard they are devastatingly painful...I would go to the Specialist. Does not mean you have to keep going. Once they get something working for you, your regular neuro can than take over.

          Cheers--Katie

Cinderelly- you said you have a "bad case"- do you mean you get cluster migraines? For me, they come on every once in a while, feel like it's coming right out of my eye. I have one every day for 1-2 hrs for about a week at a time.

I have been getting up to 20 or so a month since being on G. This is why I don't think she can not be the one treating them. It could be perimenopause.. thrown in.. I don't
I have had them bad all my life, she put me on corgard.. I found out later this was not the right beta blocker for me to be on with asthma type trouble.
I had been on toprol before.. she says now she won't prescribe any. I am just at a loss...
I am concerned she prescribed the wrong type of beta blocker. I had been on the Keppra one week and after reading up on the internet it said to give it about 2 weeks.
I also know it won't just be one 200 mile trip... this will be 1 one many.

That's a loooooonnng trip, so I can see your concern there. My trip to the specialist neuro runs 1.5 to 2 hours. It's a big drive. My folks make a 5 hour drive every week for my mom to get treated by the docs that treat her well. For her peace of mind, it's worth it. The book a hotel, stay overnight and come home the next day.

That being said, 20 headaches a month is nothing to sneeze at either. BTDT, and should have called the doc when they started getting chronic. If I had, maybe things would be different now? Who knows? But I can say that once they started on that chronic path, they stayed that way for a long, long time (several years?), and got more painful. It had gotten to where it took 4 advils and a tramadol to knock them out.

I think it's great when docs refer out something they feel is above their level of experience and training. It's the best thing they can do for you. Consequently, more than one trip may not be needed to this particular neuro. And if they're in a big city, you could make a mini vacation of it with the doc visit as just a little side activity.

There may be much better choices in meds that your doc has no experience with. The uni neuros have an arsenal of choices for treating migraines that other docs would never consider using. My vote would be on giving it a try, knowing your doc is making the best choice for you that she can.
I do not have MS. I have Whatchamacallit; and all of the symptoms are mirages.

Thanks, I really appreciate your input. I should have chosen words better. She did not drop me. She did however make some bad medication errors. My GP did verify that. He is doing some appt making for a new neuro.
I hope and pray this works out.. thanks for all the input.
