Service/balance dog tax deductible?

I was thinking about getting a German Shepherd and training it on my own for my own personal needs but I was curious, since it's for MS are service/balance dogs tax deductible?

IRS Publication 502 says that the costs associated with a service animal are tax deductible. The publication doesn't specify whether any certifications are necessary to qualify an animal as a service animal.
