    Balance Issues

For some reason today is the day I cannot walk a straight line and having trouble staying upright. I am having some problem with vertigo, to the point where I am nauseated.

This morning while getting my things together to leave for work I leaned over to pick something up from the table I lost my balance and fell. Fortunately the table was close enough for me to grab hold of to keep from hitting the floor. I have been stumbling and staggering ever since. Walking with a cane has even become a challenge.

I guess it is going to be one of those days. Work will be very interesting.

Hi WDS - Walking a straight line was a bit of an adventure for me too. I haven't had a drink in 23 years but I'm sure the world thought I was a stumbling drunk I started IV steroids last night and they seem to have reduced the number of drinks I'n not consumed. I still want the hand rail on stairs and walk next to buildings when possible so I can carom rather than fall!

It's aggravating, isn't it? Do you take Meclizine or something else for dizziness? I take it as needed. Of course. there are times when I need it a lot more.

My PCP gave me meclizine, but the fog/grogginess out weighed any benefit. I didn't have a big dizziness issu, just balance.

          Me too

I hate this sx. At least I can hide the pain. Hard to high the unsteadiness. Sorry you are dealing with it. Be careful.

I do take Meclizine and it does help with the dizziness. i just feel like I am in a fog today. Kind of a here but not here feeling. I am still stuggling to walk straight and my legs are a bit shaky and stiff.

MS, it is starting to get on my NERVES!! LOL!! You have to keep your sense of humor.

I do wish MS would just get where it's going to take me, and stop already.
It's the daily adventure I can't stand, waking up and wondering which exciting new/old symptom will appear today or which one has already snuck up on me in the night.
Or will MS toy with me, and give me a good day?

It's one step forward, knowing any day it's going to be two steps back.

              Love Dave Barry, too.

                PT for balance

I understand what vertigo is like, I have had it. And I don't know if PT would help when it is that acute, but my balance has been helped so much from PT, and I am not doing PT right now, and the benefits remain. I think I learned how to balance using other cues, and circumventing the problems MS has caused. Don't get me wrong, I can still tip over pretty easily, but if I pay attention, I can regain better balance.

                  Vertigo

                  Hi Waydwnsouth1
I have been having problems with vertigo for several yrs.
Drs. looked at my ears for quite some time , then we did
mri and it showed lessions so i did all the blood work & spinal tap etc. My vertigo was real bad if I was lying down
like if i rolled over in bed to many times then i couldnt get up or if i was on a creeper changing my oil and turned my
head to many times it made me sick and still does I took mecelzine , antivert and it was ok for a while then i started
having the "fog" it was bad so i told my Dr and he put me on diazapam/valium 2mg. 3 x day as needed sometimes
i need it 3xs a day and sometimes i go for a couple of weeks without it . I try to limit how fast i turn my head &
how many times ! However if I overheat then the next couple of days will be lets just say somewhere between
too much to drink or just too tired . I hope it this might help you I am new to all of this to . Good luck!

                    Vertigo with Nausea

What a cocktail. I've had vertigo before, where it feels as if I'm on the deck of a ship with waves swaying all around me, but with this current flare (ten weeks in--phew) it's also affected my balance, and today I went outside to mail a letter and was swept with nausea. I just had one session of PT, a very thorough workup, and was given an exercise that involves tracking horizontally and then vertically while focusing on an object on a table or your own finger held about a foot from your face. So far, it just creates more vertigo and an instant eye ache. If anyone has any tips for this besides medication (which I'm told can make weak legs weaker) I would love to know. You are all so wise, and it seems someone here has always been there, done that. Thanks!

I hate PT last year for my ankle and back, and one of the things they worked on was my balance. Before that, if I closed my eyes standing up, I would immediately start to fall. It helped me so much! Even my neuro noticed a difference between now and this time last year. Even my balance standing on one foot is better.

                        PT for balance

Is there a specific type of physical therapy for balance, or a specific specialty in PT for MS? We live in a small town with a PT center, but to my knowledge it is mostly for orthopedic issues. Should we contact an MS center in a larger metro area, or can any physical therapist help my DH with his balance issues?

                        Thanks,

                          Vestibular Therapy

It's called vestibular therapy and needs to be done by trained specialists. I've just begun it for balance issues and dizziness and have only had two sessions, but can already tell it's going to help. Nothing mechanical about it, so suggest you do a search for someone in your area. These people can fine-tune a plan of exercises based on detailed gait analysis. They think some of my eye pain is from holding my head super straight to keep a sense of balance and are actually getting me to shift my weight more and "allow myself" to be off balance without constantly unconsciously trying to correct it with my head.
It's too soon to tell, but I think the dizziness is less and so is the nausea. Hope you find a good practioner!

                            what is this?

I have some equilibrium issues from time to time, but lately I've been experiencing somthing I can't figure out.

Whenever I walk down a wide or narrow hallway, my body starts leaning/turning to the left. I have to exercise a conscious effort to keep from running into the wall.

                            Anybody else out there????

                            Thank you!

i can relate to so much of this thread. 4 and 1/2onths ago I could wear mini heels and walk. Now I am still in the relapse and very much wondering if too much time has passed for me to recover from it. Anyway the relapse has left me unable to walk fluidly and even though I don't have nausea i have no balance and fall loads even with a crutch
