    Neuro-ophthalmologist Appointment This Morning

I had an appointment with a neuro-ophthalmologist this morning. (In fact, my eyes are still dilated and everything is blurry, so if I mistype someting, you'll know why.)

Anyway, I told him about the blurrriness in my right eye that is worse when I'm overheated, also about the flashing lights in my left eye, the zigzag of light when my eyes are closed and I hear a loud or sudden noise, the large grey blob when I open my eyes in dim light (which he called some phenomenon that indicates problems with the optic nerve, but I can't remember what the name was), and the double vision I have.

He examined my eyes and did a visual field test, which was normal, except that my vision kept blacking out and I had to keep blinking to see during the test. He said too that my eyes are having trouble converging together and that can cause the double vision at times, but for the moment, my brain is compensating for it most of the time.

He said that because of all the symptoms I'm having and the convergence thing and the blacking out thing during the visual field test, he thinks that I have had mild optic neuritis at some point in both eyes, probably worse in my right eye. He said all of these symptoms are residual effects of ON. He said my optic nerve looks okay now, and my field of vision iss normal, but he said that sometimes does happen with mild ON.

I also have congenital cataracts in both eyes (which I knew about) and a cataract forming in my right eye which may be caused by the steroids I took a few years ago. He said my vision is correcting to only to 20/40 in dim light and 20/60 in bright light in my right eye. He said we could remove the cataract, but with the ON effects, there's no guarantee I'd be able to see any clearer. He's going to have me come back in 6 months to check my eyes again.

He said he will send a report to my neurologist and let her know about the mild ON. Maybe this will help get me a diagnosis finally. I hope so!!

Cut aspartame from my diet in 2012 and my symptoms have slowly disappeared. Interesting!

    Hi Shashi..

I have the exact same complaints.
On and off eye pain, all the flashes etc that ON lists.
And when I went last time to get it checked my Optic Nerve also looked ok all that.
Just less vision (due to pupil dilation and unequally)
    And colourvision.

But I mean..They just say: oh definitely not an ON case?
Just, the doctors seem really ridiclous here at times.
+ that Opthalmologist wasn't my own it was like an ER one.

I didn't like the woman but yeah..I am glad they said for you it was a mild ON.
Also the Neuro-Opthals here I don't get why they didn't do this theirselves?
Why did a normal Opthalmologist do that testing for ON by me.
Oh, they also didn't bother doing the visual field one that last time..so unprofessional.

I plan on going to a MS specialist depending on tomorrows spinal tap results and discussion.

Shani, I would definitely recommend seeing a neuro-ophthalmologist. I went a couple of years ago to my regular (non-neuro) ophthalmologist with the exact same symptoms, and she didn't know what was causing them.

I think what clued this doctor in that it was ON was when I told him about my vision blurriness gets worse when I'm overheated. I can take a hot shower or get in a hot car or exercise and can't see for about an hour out of my right eye. (I also get very fatigued and my tremors get worse too.) He said he was thinking MS after I described that even before I ever told him about the neurological problems I've had. It's called Uhthoff's sign.

I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that this will help me get a diagnosis. In my opinion, this has clinched it for me that this is MS. Now if my neurologist will just agree, maybe I can get some treatment and get out of the limbo nightmare I've been in for the past five years!

Yes, I have been follow your posts
Also I went on a consult by a Neuro-Opthal, am now too.
And they did test the pupils with the lights etc, follow the finger tests.
But never really um really look at my eye itself, like an Opthalmologist does or do a visual field.
Like they said Neuro-Opthal is a sub thingy by them and they are just yeah regular Neuro consults.
The last time the regular Opthalmologist as always did this, but that lady was not so nice..in my opinion.
She didn't even order any other tests.

And I did mention the complaint you have too, it all gets worse with heat.

My GP and Rheumy etc all agree it is a case of MS.
But my other immune diseases make it so hard.
My mom and me will think of calling my other Opthalmologist, regular one but she is a real nice lady and perhaps she knows about this, she does the visual field also unlike those unprofessional ones before...
        Else just the MS center as I mentioned and there are Neuro-Opthals there;
