    Racing thoughts at night

I'm not sure if this has anything to do with MS, but it's worth asking.

I've had exhausting insomnia for years. The last couple of years I randomly get a night when my mind is racing around with every memory and thought that's ever been a part of my life. It goes on for hours.

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions about how to "turn it off". I kind of think this is part of the anxiety issue. It's not every night, but when it kicks in.. it's non-stop.

    Thanks guys.
    Marti

    Hi Marti,

Sorry to hear you are still having issues with insomnia. Have you started to try any of the tools used to help with anxiety? If not, that would be my recommendation.

Also, the NMSS has an article on sleep disturbances in MS and some steps to try to help.

    https://www.nationalmssociety.org/Na...ughes_2016.pdf

I found it in interesting they reference a CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) for sleep disturbances. It may be worth looking into and see if available to you.

I'll be a broken record. I'm sorry; I know I suggest this over and over.

Meditation. Listening to your breathing. Going to your "happy place". Etc.

They will likely take practice, during daytime and awake times. You will need to accept that your mind will continue to wander. That happens to all of us. And just gently bring your mind back to your breath and your meditation. Start with five minutes a day. Work your way to longer.

Here are some you could look into:

        Hi marti

This info from Cleveland Clinic may help:

When You’re Trying to Sleep But Your Mind Is Racing, Give These Tactics a Try

        https://health.clevelandclinic.org/w...tactics-a-try/

        If nothing seems to work…

"Humans experience roughly 50,000 thoughts per day. It is normal to have thoughts all day long and to experience situational anxiety, but for some people, they may feel as though they don’t have any control over their racing or worrisome thoughts at night, and this can impact their functioning.

When this is the case, these individuals may benefit from treatment with a sleep psychologist or another mental health provider."

Hopefully you will find something that works for you, marti.

Lunesta used to work for me by quieting my thoughts at night.
