Have you ever had a DNA swab?

I think I love my new doctor. She ordered Zoloft for me and it started causing some problems. So she asked if I would agree to a DNA test to weed out the meds that will or will not work for me. Never heard of this, but I was only too happy to let them do this test.

Has anyone heard of this or had one??

    Hi marti ~

I had not heard of DNA swabs for medication prescribing purposes.

Somehow I'm not too surprised, though, as medical technology seems to be progressing along at a rapid pace!

Let us know what the test results are.

The name of the company is Genesight and it looks like the test is specifically for antidepressants. I'm not real sure yet, but I didn't think it would hurt to allow it.

Found this info on the GeneSight website:

          What is the GeneSight® test?

If you’ve been diagnosed with depression and failed at least one medication, you may benefit from GeneSight® Psychotropic, a pharmacogenomic test that analyzes how your DNA may affect your response to depression medications. The results of the test can help your doctor prescribe a more genetically optimal medication and avoid medications that may cause side effects or be less likely to work.

I've known many people who have had trouble finding the right antidepressant, and who have given up trying.

This method would be fantastic, if it is indeed successful in helping to find the best antidepressant sooner. Much better than going through several meds by trial and error, and with side effects.

A DNA swab is certainly an easy enough test!

They gave that to me once. It came back normal. When something comes back normal I say hurray!

While I think this technology is important and will eventually be very helpful worth noting at this time the results do not tell which medication will work for a patient.

Here are some interesting articles. I also think there was one class of medications that is no longer offered in this package but I can't remember which one.
