What's wrong with using Vitamin D supplements ?

I read a few articles about the debate over using Vitamin D supplements!
I have been using Vitamin D3 at a dose of 5000 iu, once daily for over 2 years !
Before I began using Vitamin D3 supplements, 5000 iu, my blood level was below 20 . My PCP worked with me to increase my level. My levels have increased to over 55 and I feel much better than I have felt for a few years !
    I don't understand the debate !

    Hi Jerry

Were the articles specific to MS or general health articles?

I have read some that were general health. They were saying if you have normal levels, no need to supplement.

From a general health - higher than normal levels of Vitamin D can cause a range of symptoms (digestive issues, nausea, dizziness, frequent urination to name a few), can decrease bone strength because it interferes with vitamin K2, and can also affect kidney function.

If specific to MS, what was the context?

My D level was very low (9, I think). They say that low D levels are associated with an increased risk of developing MS. The dr suggested taking D. So I asked, Once you have MS, is there evidence that taking D has any benefit to MS? The answer was that there wasn’t any evidence. Maybe there is now.

        From Mayo

Some studies suggest that for people who already have MS, vitamin D may offer some benefits. These benefits include lessening the frequency and severity of their symptoms, improving quality of life, and lengthening the time it takes to progress from relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis to the secondary-progressive phase. But the evidence isn't conclusive. Vitamin D supplementation in people with MS appears to be safe but at high doses can lead to changes in calcium levels. More research is needed to determine whether it's truly beneficial.

          Hi Jerry

Taking too much Vit D may be harmful.

The Irish Medical Journal reported about a man with MS and the story demonstrated the risks associated with overconsumption of vitamin D. The man, who was 45 years old and restricted to a wheelchair because of his MS, had been vomiting, constipated, and lethargic for over a week. In the emergency room, blood tests revealed that he had severe hypercalcemia — in layman’s terms, too much calcium — as well as an acute kidney injury.

A small study in 2016 found that a daily dose of vitamin D3 as high as 10,400 IU was safe. However, the duration of the pilot study was only six months. The man in the above case had been taking roughly that amount of the vitamin — but for almost two years. He told doctors he hadn’t seen a neurologist in seven years.

It's a good reminder that when taking supplements, the doctors have the correct dosage and that regular blood work is scheduled to check levels. Everything I read on harmful affects were for higher dosage, long term use, and inadequate bloodwork to monitor.

              I agree.

All of my doctors (primary care, MS specialist, functional medicine) recommend supplementing with vitamin D3. I have regular blood work done.

My doctor just had me drop my D3 from 5000 IU a day to 2000 IU a day. I was reluctant because of 3 years relapse free but when he showed me the levels (over 96) I was like oh well ok

My MS specialist recommends taking 1000-5000 IU of vitamin D3 daily.
