    how often to see neuro?

    Hello all,

I'm sure this is not a new question and I'll bet the answers will be varied

How often do you REALLY need to see the neuro if you are stable? He wants to see me every 6 months and I said "how about every year?" And I'm wondering if that is necessary being I've been stable (and off my meds). I just don't want another $$ doctor payment $$ for no real good reason. Just so I can spend 15 minutes talking and doing a "field sobriety test".

    Any thoughts welcome.

Yeah; I don't know how necessary it is.

I see my MS Specialist every 6 months. In the past, before switching doctors, I saw my neurologist every six months too. That might be fairly standard.

My MS Specialist is 3 hours away. When I have an appointment, I schedule it for a Friday or a Monday and we usually make a weekend trip out of it, so gas, meals and hotel make it even more expensive. I've decided it's OK; it's a mini-vacation for us twice a year.

    - In 2008, I was back in limbo briefly, then re-dx w/ MS: JUL08

For quite some years I have yearly appointments with my Neurologist. If something comes up I can call and schedule an appointment at any time.

I am on Tysabri, and I am required to see my neurologist every 6 months. I'm in and out in 30 minutes max.

Likewise, on Tysabri and every 6 months.

One thing to think about is that if you do have a problem in the future, I think it is better if the neuro knows you and what your normal is. So that frequency may depend on how long you have been seeing this neuro.

It makes sense that if someone is on a medication that needs to be closely monitored or have labs monitored they would see the neuro more often.

I'm on Copaxone always saw my neuro yearly until past couple of years q18 months just enough to keep insurance paying for the expensive medication I suppose. There isn't much he can do for me other than possibly suggest another medication if I start progressing so I'm happy not to have to go there more often.

Saw my new neuro today for the first time. He said he likes to see his new patients every 3 months regardless so he gets to know them. He did say though that since I have been relatively stable for a while, he was ok with 6 months, given that I use their infusion center and the the RN knows me well. I also am guessing that since he took over an established practice and had his own prior, he is probably happy to push some patients out on visits!

So still 6 months for me.
