    MS and osteoporosis

Anyone been diagnosed with osteoporosis. Dr is wanting me to take Prolia, the side effects look so bad, I'm not sure what it will do with an autoimmune disease. I read it was bad for a lupus patient.

I have it here. I refused to take the meds. So far I'm up and going. Of course, there's no guarantee. I hate taking medicine and won't if I don't absolutely have to. Hard decision for you or anyone. You can try taking lots of Vitamin D and Calcium etc. No guarantee with those either.

While I can't speak to that specific medication I do believe it has been under diagnosed and under treated since there were some significant side effects several years back.

I'm sure I will end up with it as I'm on the thinner side, cauc female. I plan to treat if my physician recommends. The chances of fractures and the sequela that follows in an older person frighten me.

I was dx with osteoporosis 2 years before my MS dx. There wasn't any reason for me to receive the test other than it was part of a panel (5 test for $125, or some such thing). I live in a still rural (barely) area... a van arrives, sets up shop in a church hall, VFW post, volunteer FD, etc. Actually was interested in the potential blockage of the carotid arteries test. Passed all but....

their basic bone test said to get a bone scan.

The scan (tech) said it is osteoporosis. Who knew? Never broke a bone that I am aware of. Pretty sure I cracked a few ribs in my life but... I always do strength training as part of my gym routine. And supplements, Calcium & Vit D. No additional drugs though.

          Me too.
I was diagnosed with osteoporosis last year. I had had a couple of small bones in my foot break so my doctor prescribed phozomax. I take it along with my calcium and vitamin d. I haven't had any side effects from it. I feel better that I'm doing something to try and improve my bone density.

Yes, me too....earlier this year. Getting another diagnosis of something else was difficult for me. My doctor wanted me to go on Reclast but I saw an osteoporosis specialist and he wants me to wait on that. His thinking is that there is bone density and bone quality. He thinks my bone quality is probably pretty good (although I have had fractures in the past) and that there are new meds coming out that will actually grow bones...so I see him again in several weeks. My thought is to proceed carefully!!
