What do you look for in a neuro?

Since I was forced to get a new neurologist, it started me thinking about what I want in one. If you had to list the top 3 things you want in a neuro, what would it be?

    Here's mine, in priority order:
    1. MS knowledge is current
    2. Good Listener/Responsive
    3. Respects my decisions, assuming they are informed decisions

    What do you look for?

    * Puts patients' condition, history, and treatment in context even if no time to "know" patient
    * In addition to clinical practice is a researcher or teacher (enjoys discussing new developments and treatments)
    * Excellent office administration
    All the best, ~G

I would agree with your list Kathy.

I tend to like Neurologist's and other Drs. that have a sense of humor but, can also maintain proper boundaries.

By the way; Congratulations on joining the Moderation Team. I think it's a good fit

Thanks FlyerFan! I decided I would try the guy who bought the neuro's practice, primarily because of the infusion center. I see him in July. If I am really concerned, will definitely check out your neuro. If not sure, may wait out a 2nd appointment to be fair. I didn't like my last neuro the 1st appointment, but really liked him after.

Thanks also for your kind comments.

                  Someone who:
                  • loves their job. These are people that will be lifelong learners and appreciate their patients. I have worked for large medical groups and far too many doctors hated their jobs and were collecting a pay check. Then there were those whose eyes would light up when talking about new medications or research.
                  • considers the patient as part of the medical team
                  • encourages questions, listens, and fully answers questions. I typically prepare written status updates and questions. My current doctors will go down my list of questions and check them off when they respond to them. Love it!
                  • explains the treatment plan and sets realistic expectations
                  • does hand-on examinations
                  • reads MRIs instead of just depending on radiologist reports. My favorite neurologists will go over your MRI results with you explaining the findings and pointing out lesions, etc.
                  • has common sense
                  • is responsive
                  • available in an emergency
                  • professional office staff

                    Hi Kathy,
I know Dr. Tabby and he is a great guy. If he sees me at a MS dinner or event, he always takes time to chat with me. He was on my short list when I was hunting for an MS specialist.
I live near the KoP shopping mall. My neuro was Dr. McCarren, who has relocated, and I will be treated by Dr. Tatarian in Dr. McCarren's former offices in Collegeville . Good luck

Same docs JerryD. I met his nurse, was very impressed. Her exam was really thorough. I see Dr. T next month. Still on Ty and really comfortable with Kat at their infusion center. BTW, I am in East Norriton. If you ever need anything, I am close by!

I'd be happier if my neuro wouldn't lump us all together in the MS club. Treat each patient as an individual and our symptoms as unique to each of us.

I tried bringing mine some homemade cookies. We'll see if it worked.

Good idea... bribes. Hope it works. Let us know. I should also mention that these doctors need to stop limiting the time they can spend with us. I don't think anyone would abuse it, but sometimes you just have more questions than they have time.

My first neuro, I used to take a tray of assorted choc covered pretzels in at Xmas/Hanukkah and Easter/Passover. The office got the tray, the neuro, his own bag! It worked. Hope your cookies do the trick.
