Hi Marti - I take Trazadone and started at 25 mg and though the years have worked my way up to 150 mg and take it with Tizanidine for leg spasms. I have to sleep at least 9 hours a night so I don't wake up feeling like a zombie. And even then, a cup of coffee is a must.

I also have tinnitus and had it for years. What works for me is to keep a fan running which creates "white noise" that helps to block out the ringing. I also sleep in a cool room, but the fan also comes in handy when it's hot during the summer. If I sleep somewhere (like on vacation) where this is no fan, I can't sleep! Recently, I bought a travel fan to pack along

Hope this helps! What is the dosage of the Trazadone?

These are 50mg with instructions to begin by cutting them in half. What is causing this tinnitus? I don't have any problem with my hearing or ears. I recently got a battery operated fan too. Haven't thought of using it at night. Thanks so much for the advice.

I don't have problems with my hearing either. In fact, I can hear things that others can't. (That sounds kinda weird lol)

What causes it? According to the Mayo Clinic, there are many different causes, some of which are exposure to loud noises, head injury, acoustic neuroma, and blood vessel disorders. My brother has Meniere's and has ringing in both ears. So did my mom. I've been checked and I have none of these problems...except MS.

As it relates to MS, it says: Muscle spasms in the inner ear. Muscles in the inner ear can tense up (spasm), which can result in tinnitus, hearing loss and a feeling of fullness in the ear. This sometimes happens for no explainable reason, but can also be caused by neurologic diseases, including multiple sclerosis.

Thanks again Seasha. You never fail to help me. By the way.. last night I took my half dose of Trazadone and half of a Baclofen. Absolutely wasted... no sleep at all! This is getting so old, so tiring, so scary. I'm tempted to take something for sleep this morning and get some daytime sleep. Probably not a good idea, but I'm out of good ideas.

I am so sorry you have this problem. I wake up every 1 to 2 hours every night. I then take melatonin with valerian and it helps me fall back to sleep. I was using Valium, 5 mg. but my doctor won't give it to me any more.

Insomnia is a horrible thing and I actually dread going to bed at night. I hope you find something to help you. Please let us know if/when you do!
Hey Loopey... I am going over these messages again. Not having any luck with anything to get me to sleep. I'm wondering what kind of Valerian supplement you use. I have a hard time swallowing so I can't use large pills or capsules. Do you recommend any special liquids. Melatonin is not working for me. Looking into the Valerian. Thanks

I also used to use Valerian.

You can open a capsule and pour its contents in a glass of water to drink. Or Valerian herbal tea is also available.

The problem with both of those ideas is that Valerian tastes terrible. If you swallow a capsule quickly you can avoid the taste.

I rarely use anything anymore. Breathing and mindfulness, etc are often enough.

                question

Have you gone to a sleep specialist to help evaluate the issues?

I know, I so understand, NOT ANOTHER DOCTOR!

I did not read all the posts.

                My bedtime cocktail:

Trazadone Usually 50 mg, but, have taken up to 150 mg
gabapentine 300 mg to calm down nerve pain
magnesium (to promote sleep and a natuaral muscle relaxer) can take in conjunction with a prescription muscle relaxer I just can take less of prescription

Special tinted glasses to prevent computer glare and do certain apps that will calm my brain down.
And, an audiobook to also keep me focused until I really feel ready to sleep. Then I do audiobook with sleep timer to turn off in 30 minutes.

Sorry if this is repeat information.
God Bless and have a good day, Mary

When I finish with Physical Therapy I will probably go to a sleep therapy thing. I've never listened to an audio book, but it sounds good. Do you have to have special electronics for that? Sounds like this type of insomnia is a "brain glitch" right? I thought my body was rejecting meds, but now I wonder if my mind is just messed up. Thanks so much.

I forgot about the tea. That might work. I guess I could use honey to sweeten it. I've tried the breathing tricks. Haven't gotten the hang of that. Or the meditation thing. I keep wandering off track. Thanks again Mama. Hope you are doing fine.

                      Good idea. Honey.
Or also mix with another good flavored tea.

                      Fighting insomnia.
Yeah, the wandering off track. I used to do that. It helps me to have a variety of "tricks" up my sleeve :. Then I can choose.

1.Breathe out (3,2,1). Breathe in (1,2,3). Breathe slowly. One breath for each set of numbers. Repeatedly
                      2. Listen to breath. Feel my chest rise and fall.
                      3. Or listen to my breath. Feely diaphragm rise and fall. It fills like a balloon.
                      4. Notice the "points of contact", where my body is in contact with the pillow or bed. Start at head and work way to feet.
                      5. Notice body parts. I get much more detailed than points of contact. Top of head, forehead, eyes, ears, etc, and work my way down my face, each side of body, front and back of the body, etc. It's sort of like Yoga Nidra. That works too.
                      6. Go to my "happy place". For me, I relive a fun time with grandchildren.
                      7. 478 Yoga breathing
                      8. Count slowly (5 4 3 2 1 2 3 4 5)
One breath for each number. Two times is all that works for me before I get distracted.
                      9. Put serenity prayer to a familiar melody and sing in my head.
                      10. Other songs. Lullaby. Hymns, etc. Notice breath while I do this.
                      11. Notice the sounds around me. The a/c, a distant train, the ceiling fan, etc
                      Etc

I flit back and forth through various ones to keep my mind from wandering. Often 20-30 seconds each. Sometimes less.
Often, I try to also notice my breath, if it's not too much concentration.
Often, now, I fall asleep after one or two strategies. It used to take longer.

                        Combination Valerian and Melatonin

                        Marti,
I use a pill (sort of the size of an aspirin) which is a combo of Valerian and Melatonin. I am in Italy so it's called Valetonina Long and I order it on Amazon IT.

Actually it doesn't always work but when it does I can usually sleep OK.
