    Pain with ON

Hi all. This is my first time posting, so I apologize if i'm duplicating a thread.

Last month I experienced a sudden onset of extreme pain in my eye, accompanied with vision loss (blurred and complete black out areas) After a CT scan and mri, as well as reviewing my ridiculous medical history, I was diagnosed with MS and ON. I started my infusion treatments with the hope that my vision would soon be restored. The treatments helped other things, numbness in my foot and leg, falling etc. but had no effect on my vision. It's a month later and I still have intermittent stabbing pain in my eye, and my vision has not improved. I really don't want to go back to my neuro optho as I've been living in specialist and doctors offices for the past month.

So my question, how long can I expect this to last? Should I go back or does it just have to run its course? I work on computers and it's incredibly difficult to focus and see.

    Thanks

    Hi Mandy

ON was the symptom that led to my eventual diagnosis back in 2010. Since then I have had recurrent ON in both eyes at different times. The first few bouts I had probably took 6-8 weeks to fully clear up/resolve. The more attacks I have had the repair work is not so good and I have permanent residual damage in both eyes now to varying degrees.

I don't always get pain with ON, but the few times i have the pain fades after a couple weeks most of the time. If I am run-down or just over do it it will get a bit stabby and sore every now and again. I eye patch up when the pain is bad to avoid eye movement. Computers are one of the worst things for me when I have ON, and forget a cinema movie on a big screen.

Be gentle with yourself and rest your eye as much as you can. If you have an ms nurse clinic you can verbally check in with I would suggest doing that as every persons case is so different. For me personally I think most ON relapses now take me about 2-3 months for my vision to get as good as it is going to, but the pain as I said, that leaves much earlier.

    Hope you improve quickly.
    Sarah

I don't think anyone but your doctor can put a time frame on your optic nerve healing. But Sunny is right. When the pain is bad, just rest your eyes as much as you can. There is no proof that stressing your eyes actually causes the disease to advance, but pain is worrisome nonetheless. What helps me is to take CBD or another anti-inflammatory right before bed. That way I'm resting my eyes and working on the inflammation while sleeping. For 10 years I thought my ON pain was actually a sinus problem, and taking an ibuprofin actually did help when the pain is relatively low-grade.
      All the best, ~G
