    Exercise Check-In for 03/15/18

Seven people checked in this week. Same results as last week.

    GOALS REACHED:
    Five made goals.

    GOALS MISSED:
    Two made partial goals.

    OTHER:-

Yes; my cold symptoms are over, Reg. Thanks for asking.

Congratulations to all who accomplished their goals. Congratulations to all who tried. We're still moving, even if we don't manage to do all that we intended.

My MS Specialist strongly believes that exercise helps to delay progression in MS, especially aerobic exercise. My Silver Sneakers instructor believes that it is the coordination required in aerobic exercise (as compared to strength training, where coordination is needed less) that uses our brain in helpful ways.

    For new Exercisers:
Feel free to join us. You set your own goals. You can keep the same goals week-to-week, or modify them. You decide if you accomplished them. Check in once a week to let us know how you did last week, and to set goals for the following week.

    I made both goals

    These were my goals:
    1. Average of 2,000 steps per day.
    2. Exercises at least 4 times out of 7 days. Silver Sneakers, Wellness Center, PT or something else.

    Steps:
    Th- 2876 steps; Silver Sneakers
    F - 2211 steps; pool
    S - 1423 steps
    S - 1531 steps
Mon - 2638 steps; Wellness Center
Tue - 2381 steps; Silver Sneakers
    W - 2188 steps
Total: 15,248 steps; average 2178 per day

    Just a clarification:
    • Since my Garmin tracker doesn't have GPS, it does not actually count steps. It counts arm movements. On my days at the Wellness Center, when I ride the recumbent bike, I rest my arm on my leg, so it counts each of those rotations as a step. Also, it doesn't count steps in the pool or shopping steps if I am pushing a shopping cart, so I estimate those steps and add them in.

Also, a note about my pool day on Friday. Usually, when I go to the pool, I go with Roy. I use my cane in the water to help with balance and water shoes on my feet so I don't slip and fall. When I'm finished in the pool, I'm not exhausted, but, somehow, by the time I get changed out of my swimsuit and back into my clothing, I am. I'm not sure what it is about being in the water that does this to me, but that's what happens.

I usually give me swim bag to Roy to carry and hang on to his arm with one hand while a use my cane with the other.

I didn't realize, until Friday, how much I needed his assistance. He wasn't with me this time. After getting into my clothes, I had to wall-walk from the changing room, in addition to using my cane. I was so exhausted that I just sat in the lobby for 15 minutes, trying to gain enough strength to walk to the car. Finally, I walked half-way out of the lobby, only to need to sit in another chair before getting up again.

Thankfully, the desk person asked if I needed assistance and she walked with me out to the car. I guess, now I know. No more pool time without Roy.
And, we dropped our YMCA membership because of cost. I joined the Wellness Center instead, but Roy didn't. The facilities are just not nearly as nice and, although the individual cost is a lot less, the family cost is not substantially different and he just wouldn't use it enough to justify it. We might just, occasionally, pay the exorbitant "day" cost to go to the pool at the Y together. It would probably still cost less than a family membership at the Y.

I'll continue the same goals for next week.

      Made Goal!

My Average goal is 2500 a day. I'm going to bump up to 3000 if I can. I pushed to hard a few days and paid the price. I have a lower bootey and back issue from 2010. I hurt so bad a couple days that this week I'm going to take it easier if need be. Faith, congratulations making your goal!!! I felt so bad when I read the rest of the report. What about driving? I know you and your hubbie will go together which is the safe and smart thing to do. Do you drive very much on your own? I had to give driving up 7 months ago. I'm getting more used to the idea and my way of getting around town. I hate that i have to depend on others sometimes. I really slipped since 2014. But........I'm slowly learning you can do only so much. Please be careful!!!!

      Steps:

      Thurs-2870
      Fri-2778
      Sat-4209
      Sun-2871
      Mon-1943
      Tues-2903
      Weds-3235

      Total=18,039
      Average-2578

Take care everyone and great job! Have a good weekend.

I made my goal getting some form of exercise 5 out of 7 days. We had some warm sunny days here, so I was outside cleaning up flower beds and even managed to prune my 8 blueberry bushes. what a difference getting outside upped my energy level
Babysat, grocery shopped and hosted a dinner party made for a really active week for me!

Mamabug - take care next time at the pool. Maybe the pool exercises used up your "spoons" for the day?

I did not make goal of riding bike 3 days. I did ride bike 2 days and I have been out and about a couple of days.

When the weather gets warm I am wanting to walk outside with my rolator. Do they make an inexpensive device that counts steps?

Mamabug- Great job meeting your goal. Sorry you had trouble getting out of the pool.

Great job Diamond but don't over do it.

Seasha- you really had a great wk.

Thanks for all of your concerns. Yes; the pool used up my spoons for the day. I remained out of energy for 5 or 6hours. Even needed my cane for simple walking around home, which I usually don't.

I still drive. I no longer like to drive out of town, so I don't. I think it's just an anxiety thing -- probably related to MS. But I just don't. If I'm anxious, that creates stress and that truggers flares. So I try to prevent stress when possible. But driving around town is fine.

              Made Goal

              Hi everyone

Good to see that everyone is trying hard to keep moving.

I made goal - 30 min up on feet (with rollator) 4X a day, standing, walking, or doing light activities, and stretches. Was able to walk for 30 min, on 5 days, during the week. I am grateful for this ability - it gives a feeling of some control and accomplishment.

I seem to be on a plateau (progression-wise) for the past few months, so I'll continue with the same goal, for as long as I can.

Wishing everyone good energy and strength for the week.

I walked over 4K steps a day on all 7 days. Averaged 6220 steps / day.

Not sure how that happened - I spent most of the week looking for paperwork and crunching numbers for taxes. And next Wednesday is the deadline for paperwork on my husbands LTD case, so I have been rounding up the loose ends for that also. I got and put up chicken and dog food one day, and cleaned house (including sweeping and mopping) one day. We had a couple of friends come over Sunday for dinner and dominios. Husband had 2 doctors appointments last week and I had to drive him to them. Simply put a very busy and frustrating week.
I intend to go and get taxes filled out and get the remaining paperwork shipped to LTD attorney tomorrow.
I would love to schedule next week as my vacation from all activities, but alas next week is my volunteer week. Maybe the following week ?

Great job moving everyone ! Keep up the momentum.
