    Biotin

    Hi all,
Just a reminder that if you are taking biotin as a supplement for progressive MS it can cause the thyroid blood tests to show hyperthyroidism. I noticed a posting on this web site, reading it then showed the surgeon and that prevented me from having an unnecessary thyroidectomy (1 day before surgery). This side effect does not appear to be well known outside of the US. I stopped taking Biotin and all the thyroid tests returned to normal.
Biotin appeared to affect TSH<.01L as well as the TS3 >100K & TS4 17.1. I am now retaking Biotin why they try to replicate the abnormal readings.Has anyone else had abnormal TSH TS3 & 4 readings on Biotin?
    Thanks

I have never had a thyroid test that I know of, but I saw my MS specialist this past week and she warned me that this was a possibility. She also recommended taking it and she knew was coming to see if she could get a prescription approved for a higher quantities than what is sold OTC. Thank you for writing this

      This eplains it

I just had blood drawn yesterday.

Now I know why my neuro ordered thyroid tests.

          Good to know

It's amazing the info I learn on this site.
A dermatologist recommended Biotin to help my fingernails. I've got a mild case of psoriasis on them. I also have hypothyroidism.
Looks like I'm going to need to stop the Biotin until after my next thyroid level check. That's more of a problem than the nails right now.
I'll call the dermatologist on Monday to see if there's an alternate.

Do you know how long one should be off the biotin for an accurate thyroid reading?

                Hi Tina

Sorry there appears to be confusion.

The normal blood tests show that the thyroid is abnormal. However I am not myself sure whether or not this is physically correct. The biotin may be interfering with the readings, making them false or not to be trusted. I think they can order additional blood tests to allow for biotin interfering with the reading. Does this make sense?

I am going to ask whether it is safe to stay on biotin even though the normal tests show hyperthyroidism. The tests were showing extreme hyperthyroidism however my resting heart rate was 60-70. As someone who is unfit that heart rate is not consistent with hyperthyroidism at all. The tests were wrong.

To answer your question 2 weeks being off is sufficient.

I am guessing that the dosage of biotin for the fingernails is not high enough for MS treatment. It looks like 300 mg a day helps more progressive forms of MS. My hope is to stay on the biotin and live with abnormal readings however I am not sure myself whether this is safe or not. The intent of the original posting was to help others to avoid having thyroid unnecessarily removed.

                    Biotin 100mg

I was paying $320/month for compounded Biotin 100mg - I just bought for $50 online. My neurologist recommended the site. highdosebiotin.net. Hope this helps !!

new to biotin since no other DMTs have worked

I have been on 300 mg of biotin for several weeks. I'm glad I read the thyroid lab results info as I have hypothyroidism and have that checked yearly. Is anyone experiencing anything good or bad being on the biotin? I have slight fever and headache and acidy stomach. Don't know if this is due to taking the biotin or not. and as always I am extremely fatigued and tired but was hoping biotin would help this.
(also is there a spell check button on this page?)

I am also on 300mg of Biotin and experienced readings which indicate hypothyroidism. However
at the suggestion of my oncologist I stayed off of it for 2 weeks which brought my readings
back to normal. I am continuing with the biotin. So far no changes with my MS symptoms except
for increased nail and hair growth.

                        Good luck to you
