    A 20 year Journey

Hi everyone. A little bit about me, I'm 49 was diagnosed in 1997 and after a year or so of no gluten, dairy and lots of fish and supplements I lost all symptoms (pins and needles and numbness in legs, very bad during quick walking that would stop me from continuing) than a month ago after a very busy 18m of work, DIY no rest and a really bad virus I got out of bed to weak legs, numbness in arms, legs and feet, slurred speech, unable to write..I have not really got any better and my legs are worse writing and speech a little better, the symptoms go up and down. About to start steroids tonight for a 5 day course

I'm changing my diet and added more vitamins and oils (flax) and praying that I can go back to work and not sell the house that we have put our life and sole into

I have a wonderful fiance and lovely little whippet, I just want to keep things on track and recover.

Any advice and thoughts greatly appreciated

Hello Agerx and welcome to MSWorld.

It appears you are having an exacerbation (relapse, attack, flare-up) of MS Hopefully steroids will help you improve.

We can change our diet, take vitamins/supplements, exercise and do everything "right" and still have exacerbations. Sadly, exacerbations are part of this disease

I just want to keep things on track and recover
I am betting you will recover When mobility is affected it can take time and effort on your part to try and get back to baseline. Sometimes a new baseline can occur after an exacerbation.

Patience is needed during these times

        Best to you

        Hi Agerx,
Remember how wonderfully your body bounced back the last time - think good thoughts. No matter how it goes, try to not dwell on the problems. Keep up a healthy whole-foods diet and lifestyle. Rest every day - if only for 10 minutes! (advice I never take Get outside when you can. Don't work so much! Hug yourself.
        Take care.

          You are not alone

          Hi there!
i know how you feel, except my numbers are different. Diagnosed in 1986 , ms for 30 years. It is not something to brag about.
exacerbations over the years but just this last year I became worse. My legs give out when I stand longer than 10 minutes. I need a walker or my scooter for balance. It is very frustrating. I should be happy to have had so many good years but I still have to whine and cry sometimes and ask why me?

            Hi Agerx.

I am new here and newly diagnosed so I don't know if I can offer any help. I just wanted to pop in, say hello and let you know I am sending our good vibes for a good recovery after your steroid treatment!

Some comments about my journey with MS & comments about new Topic of the Month Forum

              Thanks for all the comments!

I've been diagnosed with MS for 20+ years.

Have tried to stay on the right diet for me, exercise plan, and shift to different DMT's over time, as needed.
              And the right symptomatic treatments.
Positive attitude has been key, staying busy, and support/encouragement from family and friends.

I have an MS Specialist who has thousands of MS patients and has really helped me find the right treatment or changes in treatments over time. Also, my Neuro had me get a sleep study for fatigue, and found I had sleep apnea. Getting on a CPAP machine under supervision of a neuro-trained sleep specialist made a transformative difference in my fatigue level.

Do you all go to an MS specialist or a general neurologist? I know this can vary depending on where you live.

Thanks for the support, I am on day 2 of steroids and hoping.

I just hope I can finish our dream house, a wonderful listed building in Bath that we plan to be home for ever, the mortgage is big and another 2years to finish. It was a wreck and roofing should be started soon (lead and listing officers makes it expensive ) but it will be lovely

If work (I'm in finance so not manual) is a problem it's game over with the dream
