Found Oligoclonal Bands on LP -- Please help interpret

I just read the results of my LP on a patient access site. I may be reading this before my neurologist! Anyway here is the wording. I showed 8 bands, <4 is normal:

Interpretation (Oligoclonal banding) <4 bands 8
    (NOTE)
The oligoclonal band assay detected 4 or more IgG bands in
the CSF, which are not detected in the serum. This is a
    Positive result.
CSF is used in the diagnosis of MS by identifying increased
intrathecal IgG synthesis qualitatively (Oligoclonal Bands)
or quantitatively (IgG index or IgG synthesis rate, CSF).
Oligoclonal bands (4 or more CSF-specific bands) and/or an
elevated CSF IgG index are detected in up to 90% of
patients with MS. These findings, however, are not specific
for MS as CSF-specific IgG synthesis may also be found in
patients with other neurologic diseases including
    infectious, inflammatory, cerebrovascular, and
    paraneoplastic disorders.

    Hi thisiswater

To me the results mean that the CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) has O-Bands and increased IgG, which are signs of an abnormal immune response in the central nervous system.

These findings are seen in MS, but also seen in other neurological disorders.

So, other disorders need to have been ruled out, and other diagnostic criteria for MS ruled in, before a dx of MS is made.

This is info from NMSS about spinal tap:

    Hope this helps.

      O-bands + other symptoms = MS

Thank you Koko -- The LP was the final piece of testing my neuro wanted to confirm his dx which he did, today. I've had optic neuritis, many parathesias and a recent MRI that showed "innumerable" lesions, whereas my baseline showed only 1 (7 years ago). So I'm dealing with this news.

I understand, and it's tough to deal with. Sometimes it takes awhile to "digest" it all.

Wishing you the strength and peace to deal with this.

Thinking of you while you process the news. I had to visualize lifting the heavy stone of worry from my chest and while it took some time, eventually I could take a full deep breath again. Sending you caring vibes.

Keep us posted on what the doctor says. I know waiting is frustrating.
