    Is an EMG necessary?

What good is having an EMG done? Does it have anything to do with diagnosis of or treatment of MS? Is it worth it?

    #2
One of the diagnostic criteria for MS specifies that other possible causes for the patient's signs and symptoms must be ruled out.

An EMG serves to rule out causes for signs and symptoms that are outside the central nervous system and are, therefore, not MS. In addition, if positive, it opens the door to diagnosis of conditions that are not MS so that those conditions can be identified and treated as quickly as possible.

If the evidence for MS is solid, an EMG can be bypassed. If the evidence for MS isn't solid, an EMG allows the diagnostic process to move forward, whatever the outcome might be.
