    Symptoms and cognition

    Hello,
I have been in limbo for three years. My short term memory is really terrible. The neuro in my town just assumes Seattle will take care of me so I finally called them and asked if I should even keep going to the ms clinic or if I need to go somewhere else? Like a general neuro... They answered saying I need to come in for a neuro cognitive testing, to see a neuro muscular specialist that also assesses for other neuro degenerative diseases, a follow up with the ms physiatrist, and finally a follow up with the ms neuro after the other assessments have been done. I live several hours from Seattle so they will schedule all tests over a two day period .

Has anyone been through anything similar? But in particular the neuro cognitive testing?? What is it like? What can they tell you from it?

Neurocognitive testing starts with the neuropsychologist sitting down with you and getting a history of your life, then your symptoms. Afterward you will be given a battery of tests to test your memory, processing speed, and IQ. You may also have to do the MMPI personality testing to see if there are any underlying issues like bipolar disorder or borderline personality disorder, etc. In the end they will add it all together and come up with why you are having memory issues. These tests can tell if you are having them from MS as there are tests for MS specific memory issues buried in the whole mess of testing.

Its a full day of testing so bring a lunch to eat. They may break it up into two days. It depends.

    Good luck
    Lisa

PS: I am not telling you more about the testing because you need to go in there blind and get a good clean diagnosis. Its for your own good.

      IQ? or not?

Ok - well- I have another question - some people say those tests do not test your IQ but you say they do... which is it? I'm nervous because I used to work in television and although I have been a stay at home now for several years I want to become a teacher and I'm scared that these tests will get me down. ugh! Math and mathematical reasoning are not my thing at all.

        Been There

I have had four neuro cognitive tests with a neuro psychologist and they all showed cognitive problems and getting worse. All they told me is what I already knew, MS has really affected my mind power. Before MS I was a straight "A" student now I have problems doing even the simplest task at work and as for math, forget about it. My big problem I'm a financial analyst! I suggest you go take the test so you can have, documented evidence. Best of luck.
