Urinary tract infection test - found helpful facts for next time

I was pretty sure I had another urinary tract infection. Started drinking buckets of fluids, before I could get to the lab after work. Haven't talked to the doc yet, but the test results were reported as mixed cultures, low numbers, probable 'colonization' rather than infection.

So I had to read about what that meant. Found an interesting article, but technical.

Here are the facts I thought were useful.

    1. For best test result, test for uti first thing in the morning, not after drinking fluid all day. Peeing a lot can cause lower numbers of bacteria on the test. (Good for healing, but not for testing)

    2. Mixed colonization (several different types of bacteria) is more common with neurogenic bladder.

    3. There is research evidence that lactobacillus, found in active or live yogurt, applied to the vagina can reduce at least one major type of urinary tract infection in women by 80 %.

I thought this was useful information for me. Thought I'd share. Here is the article.
