Tailbone Pain or muscle around tailbone?

I know it's weird but just curious if this is something or just the nuisance that it is. 2 years ago had an unexplained bout of tailbone pain that disabled me for a month, couldn't even walk..

It has come back but definitely not as severe but been sleeping with a neck pillow but around my tailbone.

Really just curious about this one, so figured why not ask. Everyone has really been so great...

Tried posting this before but don't know where I posted it.

Are you sure you haven't injured your tailbone in a fall. Sometimes it can take a while for symptomsof tailbone damage to manifest. But if that's not the case, my urogynecologist says that the pain around tailbone can often be caused by levator ani syndrome. Here's a link that explains it.

Evidently you can have spasticity in your pelvic floor, levator ani muscle as well as anywhere else. There is help for the syndrome in the form of Pelvic Floor PT.

In the short term, you can get relief from using one of those sitz baths that fit in your toilet (you can get them at any drug store) and soaking the area in warm water. Or just applying moist heat to the area.

      Oh my wow

Thank you! And no. No injury. First time it was a sudden onset that progressed quickly and then after a month one day just disappeared with occasional Minor discomfort but was able to blow it off.. Recently it occurred again but again nothing as it was two years ago! Thank you for the info!!!!!

Just Tailbone or left and/or right side of lower back

I have suffered from extreme pain in lower back (left first and still worst) that or course radiates. I feel (and just my opinion as a long time MS sufferer) that it could be from the constant muscle tightening and pulling that MS seems to do so well. I actually have curvature of the spine I feel is caused from the constant muscle pulling.

Appreciate as usual others experience with this as it is one of my worst pain issues. I have historically had monthly IV Solumedrual that helps a lot. It is always temporary of course.

          Spinal curvature

I have that also. Scolitic curvature it says. Knowing I recently had an awful car wreck, but I know I've had that prior.

My back is always in spasm and feel like the tailbone thing is cause by the same. Area is so sensitive to even sit that I either sit on one butt cheek or the other lol looks like I have a wedgie I'm trying to break loose or something but I just can never seem to get comfy!

I seem to always be in pain lately. Always something. I feel like others think I'm faking when I'm limping cuz my hip hurts or getting up cuts my breath short cuz my lower back is all weird. When and HOW will it end!

I have been struggling with the pain in my butt for the last 3-4 years. It has gotten progressively worse ( like everything else) and now it is horribly difficult to find a position of comfort when sitting or lying down. I spend a lot of time laying or sitting on ice to numb the pain. It can be on one cheek or both, it can be just around the coccyx, it can be burning, aching or dull itchy pain. I also get very painful episodes of ache down the lateral left thigh that can be independent of the other pain. I can't sit through a movie or travel upright for any length of time. When we have to drive farther than 10 miles I have to lay down in the back of our Prius - I have a regular nest of pillows and foam padding.

I have a pain specialist that works with my neuro and they've got me on methadone for the pain, which helps, but not always. Ice is still my best friend but all in all my quality of life sucks.

Yes! I broke my tailbone about 5 years and am currently experiencing pain that feels just like it. No falls, no new injuries, pretty confident its MS. I'll try something warm on it and see if that helps. Thanks for the tips. I hope this doesn't become a common or permanat thing. It's extremely uncomfortable and makes walking, bending, and sitting difficult.

Approx 2 years ago I felt like my upper body was imploding into my hips only when sitting. Not having had a MS fall I assumed it was MS so I held off going to the doc. When it became unbearable I went through the "ruling out" process (family doc then neuro).

First X-Ray showed a fracture on the coccyx part on the tailbone. I remembered a "trip" on my driveway, I gently landed on my side but it was the only fall I had. I've had some brutal falls, not breaking anything!

7 months later I fractured the sacrum! Another part of the tailbone. First fracture hadn't healed yet and I felt this one happen.

I spent a lot of the year sitting on a hemroid donut while they healed!

Just want to point out that I have extremely good bone density, a test was done prior to starting Copaxone over 7 years ago. When retested, it was just as strong. Doc figures it was the angle at which I fell.

                Good luck!

                  Hi IsThisRealLife,

I'm sorry you are having this pain.

I also had tailbone pain, which began shortly after my diagnosis and it was unrelenting for 6 years. I remember how disabling it was, tried a many rounds of PT and even injections (wasn't Botox in that region, but can't remember what they were) from two different pain management doctors. I never went anywhere without a coccyx cushion, and was always using a heating pad, even when I went to sleep (bad idea, so I learned, but at least they shut off automatically now). But, nothing really helped. All I could think was that it continued to have something to do with how I walked.

I also have mild (to moderate in some X-ray reports) scoliosis. Another thing I found out was that had fractured my tailbone at one point and it healed at a slight angle, but really have no idea when that happened.

But it turned out my problem really wasn't because of any of the above, but was due to spasticity in that region. I had significant enough spasticity in my legs that wasn't relieved enough by oral medications that I was finally referred to a spasticity specialist. He recommended the baclofen pump. Nowadays, I still have pain from spasticity in my back, but after it was implanted, the tailbone pain finally disappeared. (Hallelujah to that!)

It wasn't fun, and the only time it subsided a bit was when I was totally relaxed (in a deep sleep). I can remember some people saying because of that, the pain was all in my head. (Well, yes, it really was )

For me that pain finally ended with the baclofen pump. Good luck to you finding relief, and soon.

I have the same exact problem but have not tried ice. I have tried the heating pad and was not impressed with it. Right now I just take a lot of ibuprofen or Naprosyn, which just takes the edge off a little. The pain is now there to some degree all the time. It used to just be after sitting for a long time.
The pain Is there because my hamstring muscles are so unbelievably stiff, which makes them short. They in turn pull on the sacroiliac joint causing "pain in the butt." My feet and legs hurt when I stand and my butt hurts when I sit. No win except for lying down on my side. Going to try ice and see if it helps. I just wish they made ice packs that big.
