    GAPS diet??

I am currently on the OMS diet but recently found out about GAPS. I must admit, the information I have read so far is really intriguing to me and seems to go against a lot of what I believed to be true. Has anyone looked into this or tried it? What do you think?

Not officially diagnosed due to non-MS-specific spots on MRIs, but the neurologists all agree it's MS.
Frustrated. January 2019: finally saw an MS specialist worth seeing. Maybe we'll get to the bottom of this.
    EDSS of 5.5, sometimes 6.0

I'm thinking there has to be a reason for that. Just because someone comes up with a diet and puts a name on it doesn't make it good.

I've never seen any other diet that actually promotes eating saturated animal fat and dairy. There's an ocean of information from all kinds of health scientists explaining why animal fat is bad for the body in general. The Swank diet in particular explains why its bad for MS. And there's a lot of information about why dairy is a prime culprit in allergies and food sensitivities. That's inflammatory and automatically bad for MS. I don't think a few articles or studies that say something else are enough to overrule all of the other studies from so many widespread sources.

As tasty as saturated fat can be (God bless you Ben & Jerry ) I'm not about to try it as the basis of my diet and not just because of MS.

Ditto, MSer102. All one has to do is read Swank's book. Some one is blowing smoke ! Good luck

Went on modified GAPS for 6 months to help with gut and digestive issues. That, and kefir, made an incredible difference. I was almost swelling up from impaired digestion/ leaky gut. Started losing weight, back to my usual self, as my gut issues improved. Had great results. Am not on it anymore due to foods not good for MS. GAPS is not meant to be a permanent eating plan. It's extremely boring eating so much broth for months and months. And i don't agree personally with staying on it for two years. Once my digestion improved markedly and stabilised I gradually reintroduced other foods. And beware meats like bacon etc - more for salt and chemicals than for fat.

          GAPS Diet works

          Hi JJS,
Michela and I talked about the GAPS diet a lot. I was on it for awhile now I'm on a modified gaps diet with still lots of soups, stews and casseroles. Point being easing the digestive system strengthen stomach & intestine enzymes. Kefir is amazing and so is probiotics and protandim.

The animal organs was tough yuk! but it helps. Once in awhile I'll do the liver ice cubes into my soup. I also do juicing 2x a day and every herb & natural remedy I have taken. Fermented fruits, berries and veggies along with animal fat. Get the book it has so much info in it. I would recommend seeing a dietician first.

Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride gives a nice introduction to the GAPS diet HERE:
I left in love, in laughter, and in truth, and wherever truth, love and laughter abide, I am there in spirit.

Update on my original post ...

Hello to all again! Thank you for your responses. I am not sure what I can do to be notified when I have a response to a thread I start, but I forgot all about this until just now!!

Ok, so an update. Curiosity had the best of me so I went ahead and tried the GAPS diet. I HATED IT. Really I did. Like I said originally, it goes against so much of what I believe and really goes against Swank, OMS, McDougall and so on. But still, the claims were impressive to me and I thought maybe it would help my daughter with her extreme 'seasonal' (all year almost) allergies and acne.

I went back to a hybrid OMS / McDougall diet ... I do not follow McDougall all the way in that I am not afraid to use a little fat once in a while. But then I do not follow OMS all the way in that I do not eat the fish (except one small bit of salmon I had in the last few months). I feel so much better on this kind of diet.

I was already consuming a good amount of homemade lacto-fermented foods each day like sauerkraut and ginger soda, so that was no big deal when trying GAPS. But all the fat and meat just really bogged me down and blocked me up. I am used to being very regular, but this was not the case on GAPS ... and this is the main thing I hated about it (besides not being able to have all my fruits and veggies each day).

SOOOO, back to the healthy, vegetarian diet with lots of fruits, veggies and other good stuff.

            Thanks again for your comments!!
