What is Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)

FES (Functional Electrical Stimulation) is a kind of technique used to produce contractions in paralysed muscles by the application of small pulses of electrical stimulation to nerves that supply the paralysed muscle. The stimulation is controlled in such a way that the movement produced provides useful function. It is used as a tool to assist walking and also as a means of practicing functional movements for therapeutic benefit.

XFT-2001 Foot Drop System is such a kind of product which adopts FES technique can help people who is suffering foot drop to walk. It consists of a FES Stim Unite & Cuff, a peripheral nerve stimulator and a Remote Control. The remote control is used to collect the gait information. The peripheral nerve stimulator is used to determine the viability of the common peroneal nerve and identify the initial placement of the posterior electrode pads. The Stim Unite can analyze the gait data which is collected by the remote control, and it can automatically set treatment ways for the patient. It will deliver the stimulation via electrode pads to patient’s muscle in the affected leg to provide ankle dorsiflexion so as to help patient raise the foot at the right time. Thus, it can improve the patient’s gait and help them to walk better. The stimulation can also facilitate muscle re-education, prevent/retard disuse atrophy, maintain or increase joint range of motion and increase local blood flow.
