WHAT TO AVOID WHEN HAVING KIDNEY ISSUES?

oops sorry bout caps, was in chat.....
hello tara and everyone. am a very convinced woman that natural sits far better with my body, long list of pharma allergies and reactions, food additives, antib's and hormones coming through in meats make all symptoms worse, etc.

I recently have developed kidney issues, 99 percent sure one smal stone passed, more t o come, ct scan in few days.

Are there any foods, supplements or vitamins listed as helpful here in this forum I would be better off avoiding at this time?

(am using sublingual B12, vitamin D, a muscle rub oil for spasm - nix that - contractures affecting most of body areas, on a muscle relaxer, and med for movemtn disorder like myoclonus but on both sides, so no name for it. eating whole foods as much as possible, organic when able)

Thanks in advance for any solid pointers!

    Water

Be sure you are drinking LOTs of water. It's a hassle you have to stay close to a bath room. Try gaterade stuff too.

It has been recommended that 10% to 20% of your diet should be protein foods. No more because something in the proteins hangs onto the walls of the bladder and causes infections. And, I believe what is good for the bladder is good for the kidneys. Drinking water and cranberry juice (not cocktail ) is good nutrition, also. I take a supplement called Uristatin to ward off UTI's. I think that some supplements ' like chromium or zinc, are supposed to support the kidneys.

pleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleaseplease try and figure out what exactly is going on with your kidneys before you try any dietary stuff.

even water! If your kidneys are not functioning normally, this means that you will retain the water, which can really cause problems (this is why people on dialysis have water restricted diets). But, it also might be that you are having a stasis problem, and you should be drinking a lot of water. We can't know! Unfortunately, you can't until you get those test results.

Kidney stones can be made of lots of different kinds of stuff (most common are calcium oxalate, but THAT IS NOT THE ONLY KIND), and so how you might alter your diet will be REALLY DIFFERENT depending on what's going on.

Sorry for shouting, I really commend you for trying to be proactive about your health and diet, I just don't want you to mess yourself up while trying to do the right thing.

        Be well.

Adding plenty of lemon to water can help.
Low sugar or sugar-free real lemonaide (no powders) can help.
Always check with your doctor though.

            thanks so much

Thanks for all your helpful replies.

I don't plan on making any additions or changes until we know what is going on for sure. I may have passed a stone (grit in the past beginning 30 years ago) that said, kidney disease is possible as well, like polycystic, and doc says i definitely still have blood in my urine even though this happened almost 2 weeks ago.

during an immediate family members cancer eval and work up, thye discovered, at some past point in time, one kidney had simply died. It caused no issue, was left alone since the cancer wasn't a curable one but there was other polycystic issues for this person. I have PCOS diagnosed age 21.

I just wish to err on the side of caution, discontinue anything that could be making matters worse, then once we KNOW for sure what we are dealing with, do what is needed to keep me in the best possible shape. I have a hubby, children, young grands and friends I'd like to spend many more long years with!

With sudden cardiac isues to contend with too, this could all be interrelated. sheesh, my plate was already overflowing. enough. I refuse t o take on anything more! so for now, my neuro hunt is likeme, in limbo, and will continue to work around what I can.

if so inclined, say a prayer for me or throw it out to the universe not to have spasms full force or movement disorder kick in so this test gets done. Stress brings them both to full speed.

thanks so much - you guys are great!

When my hubs was having kidney issues (autoimmune), the specialist recommended stepping down on the protein intake, permanently. He's a real meat and potatoes person, so wasn't happy with making those changes. He acts like he's dying when we have a vegetarian dinner, as a joke, saying his body is going into shock from eating healthy! He had to drink a lot of water to protect his bladder from the chemo meds, but other than that, there wasn't much recommended.

Depending on what kind of stones are precipitating, they might recommend changing your diet to shift your urine toward a more acidic or basic direction. It could go either way. The specialist also said that kidneys aren't like other organs in that they don't regenerate. His opinion was, we get so many recycles out of them in a lifetime and no more. You can't strengthen your kidneys like you can your heart. This is why he was against the whole push for everyone to drink x amount of water everyday. His fear was people would be burning out their kidneys far sooner than they should.

You do have a lot on your plate. Hugs and sending healing vibes. I would be concerned with a sudden heart issue in tandem with a kidney issue, and have a cell phone in my pocket just in case. Please be careful.

                Thanks lusciousleaves

info shared on your hubby much appreciated. i already watch the protien, a med created type 2 diabetes and the classes i went to taught me that.

phone is handy - they wanted to schedule another heart cath after 3 clean ones over the years, and i balked. scheduled for echo and stress testin a week or so. probably rescheduling though, as hubby has to do 12 hour night shift night before and night after. NO.

plus, am feeling so frustrated and burned out, ready to ditch everything and make a run for it - my heart yearns for a beautiful peaceful place in nature, oblivious to worldly concerns. Tibetan mountains or a lovely Scottish forest perhaps? hearing another "we don't know and can't help you, learn to live with it" speech will send me into a tizzy.

cardiologist pulled up my abdominal ct, just in case anything there would be helpful - guess what? CLEAN. No issues at all! wonderful news, very thankful, but does not explain what is happening to me!

hushing for now - appreciate your suggestions and ideas, truly. and the healing vibes much appreciated!

The first suggestion for kidney issues is a gluten free diet.

Sometimes I will find blood in the urine (with a normally clean patient) and upon investigation the patient has consumed some gluten.

I know...every doctor will poo-poo my statement but I've seen it happen over and over....

TARA - thanks so much. Have learned often docs throw a script at you and are through, while other well informed like yourself are a wealth of tried and trus knowledge.

Gluten free have not been doing, but looking into. Will be sure to research further. Went in last 2 months 2 empty nest to 1 grown child and two young boys here to cook for, tough to do many of healthier things and still manage budget!

Any recommended recent books on gluten free (book lover here)?

Also looking for non soy alternative protien sources that could be easier on kidneys. Unless organic, meats create worsening neuro and allergic response symptoms, and switching to strictly cold water fish because I understand why warm water things are not wise. (chemicals in Gulf and issues from acrss the pacific around west coast.....)

thanks again, have a wondeful day!

I know my suggestion sounded to basic, but finding blood in peoples urine when they fall of the wagon w gluten, says a lot to me.

Managing this....just look at your choices. Its not expensive and its simpler than you think.

                      Mexican; tacos instead of burritos
Asian; rice instead of noodles (athough I use rice noodles from WinCo (cheap) for noodle dishes..spagetti, etc.

Forget bread...its over rated. Have lettuce wraps
There are some tasty GF breads out there...expensive.
I was GF 24 years ago so I just gave up bread.

                      Potatoes...

I love to go out for breakfast...I order eggs and hash browns, skip the toast; plenty of food.

I'm sure some members will give you some good book ideas.

Protein: there are powders that would be easier... hemp is good, also there are bean and rice powders that when combined make complete proteins.
And the benefit of powders are you're only getting the amino acids and not the residue....(excess nitrogen) your kidneys would have to filter.

GF will go a long way towards your MS...not just your kidneys.
