Can skipping 1 Betaseron shot hurt this bad?

    Hi everyone,

My DH and I kind of had a deal that he would let me skip a shot only once. Don't ask me why I would even want to do this, but I did. Anyway, it was a couple of days ago and I just wasn't feeling good and I told him that I did not want my shot. He tried numerous times to talk me out of it but I insisted so he finally gave in. Well, instead of taking one the next day I just waited until my next schedule for one. WELL, the next day after my shot I felt like a bus hit me. Had the flu like sx all over again could hardly get out of bed. Needless, to say I will NEVER miss a shot again.

Has this ever happened to anyone or do you know why this would happen?

This happened to me once with Rebif, since it is another interferon it was probably a similar experience. I felt terrible after I skipped and ended up calling the nurse hotline. I told her that I was really achy and felt out of it. She explained to me that the body's readjustment to having the medication in my system again was likely the culprit.

To be honest (and this will probably get me flamed ) I skip pretty often. I've struggled with doing every single shot as scheduled. I'm really working on getting more consistent with that. But yes, I have noticed at times (like when I completely forgot to take my Beta on a week-long vacation) that I have the flu-like side effects more again after skipping.

I always have the flulike symptoms though even after almost 3 years on Beta; I still have to take two Advil with each shot. My NP at my MS clinic also (maybe everyone else knows this trick) told me that for some unknown reason it can really help to walk/jog for 10 mins right after the shot. For me, that makes a HUGE difference with the S/E's. If I skip it or cut it short, I feel much worse in the morning.
2001: 1st 2 relapses, "probable MS." 2007: 3rd relapse. Dx of RRMS confirmed by MS specialist. Started Cpx. (Off Cpx Feb 08-Mar 09 to start a family; twins!) Dec '09: Started Beta. Oct '13: Started Tecfidera. May '15: Considering Gilenya.
