    MAY BE LOSING JOB

Hi: I have not been formally dxd yet but am seeing an MS specialist on 2/10 and will undergo further testing. I have been on medical leave for the last 5 weeks for an unrelated issue and will be returning on Monday.

In the last 2 to 2-1/2 years, I have had two major memory crashes with other cognitive issues, especially lack of problem solving. I work in the health care field (Medical Technologist) so this has been a big concern for me, especially now that other people are noticing. Before I left on my medical leave, I made my second mistake in the last couple of months. I am sure that next week I will have to meet with my supervisor and may be written up formally.

My most major MS symptoms are cognitive. My first episode included trigeminal neuralgia, numb right leg and major memory loss where I could not remember my activities of the previous day without great difficulty. My memory never returned to its baseline and I have had distinct episodes when it would get worse. I also have had physical issues that are consistent with MS and also had an MRI/MRA for tingling in the right side of my tongue, and I think my right hand and foot (sorry, memory again), but I do recall the tongue part of it. The radiologist report said "Changes consistent with MS." MS had been suspected in the past, too, but I was never followed consistently. So I am certain that finally I will be dxd.

So how does this fit in with my job issues? When I return to work, I won't have been through the tests yet. Can I be fired when I really did make these mistakes? I know FMLA can protect me from being penalized for work missed but is there protection from the effects of the disease process itself? Am I covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act? How do I invoke that? Do I have to wait for formal dx or can I do something now at this stage?

I need my job. Without it, we will be trying to sell our house in a very bad housing market (houses on our street have been for sale for years in a couple cases, others have given up. Only one house out of 7 has sold in the last 2 years). I am scared to say the least. Thanks for any input.

Let us know how it goes. A lot of people are probably wondering.

Ideally, all of us would have long term disability insurance to take care of such things, though just because your company feels you can't do your job doesn't mean the insurance company agrees you aren't employable.

        In response to Susan

I spent 11 years in college to lose my career as a scientist as a direct result of having an MS episode at work- I was WAY too much of a liability. If you feel it coming, it probably is. Protect yourself. Sign NOTHING.

I have ended up in limbo unable to get unemployment (can't work 40 hours a week=no unemployment), and could not receive any state aid while I was in limbo waiting for disability because the company did not officially terminate me and I have a 401K. The trick is I can't touch the 401K because I am not technically terminated so we went from 3000/mo to 0/month income and there was nothing to do about it.

We lost our house, our insurance, two vehicles, our credit and darn near lost our marriage. I am 40 years old and living on borrowed money from my parents while I wait for SSD to come through. The system does very little to protect us. Don't depend on it. Save as much as you can, use your healthcare to the max. Don't let them (work) see you symptoms if possible. Take care of glasses, dental, all of it. Prepare to be cut off.

I worked at a medical research facility that works to find cures for this and other diseases. They shut my insurance down in the middle of my treatments. There is no fair or just acts in the employment world when you are a liability. Be cautious, plan ahead and protect yourself. That is the best advice I can give from my experience.

** Post broken into paragraphs by Moderator for easier reading. Many people with MS have visual difficulties that prevent them from reading large blocks of print. **

Get your Dr. involved in helping you. He can fill out FMLA papers. This should be done ASAP. Ask you employer for them. Do as much research, on this site and other places, about FMLA as you can. There is lots of it. You either get informed or suffer the consequences.

Ask for FMLA forms ASAP. Good luck..
